Black Friday mall shooting: 1 teen dead, 2 others injured after Alabama mall shooting

HOOVER, Alabama --

One teen is dead and two others have been injured following a shooting at an Alabama mall prior to Black Friday shopping.

Authorities say the shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, a nearby suburb of Birmingham.

Police say a fight between two teens, including an 18-year-old, resulted in a gunfire exchange. One teen fled but was confronted by two Hoover police officers.

Captain Gregg Rector said at a news conference that a Hoover officer "did engage that individual, shot him and he is dead on the scene."

The second teen was hospitalized in serious condition. Rector said a 12-year-old girl also struck by gunfire was hospitalized. Her condition was not immediately known.

The Riverchase Galleria said the mall is closed until further notice.

Police step up security at UP Mall after armed robbery Friday morning

Police in Mishawaka are investigating an early morning Black Friday armed robbery at the University Park Mall. It happened around 2:30 a.m. at the popular Grape Road mall.

According to officials a black male held a shopper at gun point as he walked from the mall to his car, and stole the shopper’s items. The suspect then escaped the scene in a blue BMW. He was last seen headed south on State Road 23.

Officers stepped up their patrols at the mall to keep Black Friday shoppers safe and are asking anyone with information to contact the Mishawaka PD.

Man shot during fight outside Oak Court Mall

Police responded to an aggravated assault at 11:53 p.m. at mall entrance No. 4 at 530 Oak Court Drive. The mall was open on the holiday from 6 p.m. to midnight as part of Black Friday shopping.

According to a police incident report, two off-duty Memphis police officers, moonlighting as security at the mall, told police who responded to the scene that they saw the victim arguing with a group of men inside the mall.

Security kicked the group out of the mall, and immediately they heard gunshots. When officers went outside, they found 28-year-old Matthew Morgan with his hands up. Morgan told police that he fired two shots in the air after four men fired shots from a white Infiniti after the fight.

The fight began when the 22-year-old shooting victim, whose name has not been released by police, told investigators that he was walking in the mall with his cousin and he looked at an “attractive woman” who was with another man. He told police that he didn’t say anything to the woman but “looked and kept walking.”

He said when he and his cousin left the mall, they fought with the man that was with the woman. He told police that he was knocked to the ground, but does not know when he was shot and did not hear any gunshots. He was taken to Regional One Health in non-critical condition. Police said he had injuries to his arm and chest that were “consistent with being grazed by a bullet.”

His cousin told police the fight ended when shots were fired and that he hid behind cars near the mall entrance and then “ran for his life” back into the mall.

Morgan was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. Police said the four suspects who fired shots from the Infiniti have not been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.

Thursday’s shooting is one of several violent incidents at the Oak Court Mall in recent years:

- March, 2018: A fight occurred inside Oak Court Mall and spilled outside. Shots were reportedly fired. No one was injured.

- March, 2017: Shots were fired when a masked man tried to rob a jewelry kiosk at the mall.

- December, 2016: There were disturbances reported including fights at Oak Court

- February, 2016: Police investigated shots fired at the mall. Fifteen shell casings were found at the scene, but no one was injured by the gunfire.

Police are searching for the thieves who knocked over a child while making their getaway in Missouri.

The child was on the escalator when the women ran up from behind and nearly trampled over the kid.

Police say the ladies are just three of the seven suspects who stole $8,000 worth of perfume from a Victoria's Secret on Tuesday.

Police say they know the suspects' names, and are actively searching for them.

Police said a dispute inside the mall spilled into the parking lot. Police said two women and a man tried to get away in a car when the man, a passenger in the car, was shot in the upper body. The man is in serious condition. The women suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

"That's what detectives are looking into so far, they're trying to view some surveillance video right now at the various stores and are talking to mall security to see what may have transpired inside the mall and also in the parking garage," Montgomery County police spokesman Rick Goodale said.
