Payless Shoesource pranked VIP shoppers into paying markups of up to 1,800 percent for the bargain retailer's shoes as part of a viral advertising campaign designed to shift consumers' perceptions of the brand. Creating a fake luxury brand — Palessi — Payless built a temporary store and filled it with fashionistas.

So-called fashion influencers – essentially trendsetters that regular consumers look to for style cues — paid up to $645 for footwear that usually retails for between $19.99 and $39.99, the company said. The fashion insiders were captured remarking on the quality of the shoes' design and fabrication – before being told who had made them.

"It's just stunning. Elegant, sophisticated," one shopper said of a stiletto heel at the fake store's launch party.

"I can tell it was made with high-quality material," said a man perusing a pair of leather sneakers.

I only shop at thrift shops these days. I've gotten some amazing buys, especially clothes. Yep, I'm a cheap SOB and proud of it.

Bravo to you!

I'm a germophobe of sorts, however, and avoid "other peoples'" clothing. I know many microbes are our friends (e.g., probiotics), but I always OCD about what someone else did with or to the "preowned" apparel. My wife did find "preowned" panties at a Goodwill one time, complete with "rust" stains. We alerted staff; not sure what they did with it. Sodium hypochlorite can only do so much.

I got a nice jacket about a month ago at a senior citizens thrift store for $2.50 that I wear everyday now. I was in there a few days ago and got some plates because I keep breaking mine for fifty cents each and then I had to get the hell out of there because those old women were really trying to load me up with stuff and they did. :)

My favorite jacket...I bought three on sale during GIM1 and am now wearing the second one.

One good thing about the old GIM1 days is all that doomer talk goaded me into buying a lifetime Stockpile of new quality performance clothing and footwear. Northface Goretex hooded jackets, Marmot fleece, thermals, 501 Cargo Pants and shorts, Cabella's $10 merino wool socks, Goretex boots and New Balance shoes. All on end-of-season sales. Oy vey...such deals!

:)
