The Trump administration moved Tuesday to officially ban bump stocks, which allow semi-automatic weapons to fire rapidly like automatic firearms, and has made them illegal to possess beginning in late March.

The devices will be banned under a federal law that prohibits machine guns, according to a senior Justice Department official.

Bump stocks became a focal point of the national gun control debate after they were used in October 2017 when a man opened fire from his Las Vegas hotel suite into a crowd at a country music concert below, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds more in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

The regulation, which was signed by Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker on Tuesday morning, will go into effect 90 days after it is formally published in the Federal Register, which is expected to happen on Friday, the Justice Department official said.

The official wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly ahead of the regulation's formal publication and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
In March, President Donald Trump said his administration would 'ban' the devices, which he said 'turn legal weapons into illegal machines.

US President Donald Trump participates in a roundtable discussion on the Federal Commission on School Safety report at The White House in Washington, DC on December 18

Shortly after the president's comments, the Justice Department announced that it had started the process to amend federal firearms regulations to define bump stocks as machine guns.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sought public comment on the proposal, drawing more than 35,000 comments.

The amended regulations reverse a 2010 ATF decision that found bump stocks did not amount to machine guns and could not be regulated unless Congress changed existing firearms law or passed a new one.

In the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting, there was a growing push by some members of Congress to ban bump stocks, but no legislation was passed. At least 10 states have sought their own restrictions on the devices.

People who own bump stocks will be required to either surrender them to the ATF or destroy them by late March, the official said.

The change has undergone a legal review and the Justice Department and ATF are ready to fight any legal challenge that may be brought, the official added.

The amended rule was met almost immediately with resistance from gun rights advocates, including Gun Owners of America, which said it would file a lawsuit against the Justice Department and ATF in order to protect gun owners from the 'unconstitutional regulations.'

'These regulations implicate Second Amendment rights, and courts should be highly suspect when an agency changes its 'interpretation' of a statute in order to impair the exercise of enumerated constitutional rights,' the organization's executive director, Erich Pratt, said.

Police said the gunman in the Las Vegas massacre, Stephen Paddock, fired for more than 10 minutes using multiple weapons outfitted with target scopes and bump stocks.

Paddock fatally shot himself after the shooting and there were 23 assault-style weapons, including 14 fitted with rapid-fire 'bump stock' devices, strewn about the room near his body on the floor of his 32nd-floor hotel suite at the Mandalay Bay casino-hotel.

The largest manufacturer of bump stocks, Slide Fire Solutions, announced in April that it was going to stop taking orders and shutting down its website.
The remaining stock of the devices is now being sold by another company, RW Arms, based in Fort Worth, Texas.

Some glaring problems right off the bat:

Ex post facto (can't call it a law 'cause the Executive branch cannot 'make' law, which leads to...)

It's not law.

It's a taking of property without compensation.

I'm thinking Trump did this to derail the dims' efforts along these lines because surely this will be tried in the courts.

The Dims in Massachusetts passed a law making the penalty for bump stock possession to be LIFE IN PRISON.

Guess how many bump stocks got surrendered in Massachusetts after this ban went into effect.

Four.

"The Law" is whatever Federal priests in black dresses say it is.

If you or I were "justices," we wouldn't even get to ex post facto or the Fifth Amendment ("takings"). Such decree would end with "shall not be infringed." Alas, we are neither Jewish nor Freemasons.

I'm thinking the Trump regime is simply wishy-washy on the Second Amendment again.

They can make it a capital offense, if they like. When mere possession of such tools is punished with Draconian measures, that's when you need such tools the most.

Keep it up! Impose the death penalty for all gun owners! All you fuckers will succeed in doing is applying the death penalty to your armed goons who try to "enforce" such bullshit.

Sorry if it's a derail, but it's sorta kinda relevant... seeing as how this event was the primer...

This shot definitely shows a staged action. Note the two men who are quite casual while the others are acting as if under fire.

Bump Stock Destruction Instructions

• For destruction, regardless of manufacture or model, a Bump Stock must be completely crushed, melted or shredded where the Bump Stock is incapable of being readily restored.
• If the abovementioned (sic) means are not available, torch cutting is the alternate means of destruction. When utilizing torch-cutting, a Bump Stock must be completely severed with a cutting torch in the areas destroying critical design features denoted by the red lines in the specific model of Bump Stock destruction diagram.
• The Bump Stock must be completely severed in each area indicated by the red line. Those areas must be cut in a manner that removes at least ¼ inch of material at each cut location. Destruction by any other means not described above is not authorized by ATF.

Or what?

Just one of many infringements. This is minor compared to bans on normal capacity mags and semi-auto rifles ("assault weapons" sic). I have no need for a bump stock nor a machine gun (I don't have an endless supply of money for ammo, like the government).

Had enough of Trump yet?

The difference is that all those other bans went through the legislature, whereas this one was directly by the executive branch re-writing existing laws. This one is a worse precedent if it stands.

Perhaps. The end effect is the same: a tiny minority assume the right to tell the vast majority what to do in contravention of a perfectly clearly stated inalienable right. Does it really matter if it's a few bureaucrats at BATF, a handful of Satanic priests in black dresses, or a few dozen shysters in a "legislature"?

Will people still wallow in their stupidity, relying solely on the soap box and ballot box, rather than logically advancing to the cartridge box? I believe so.
