‘Simply don’t know where they are’: 14,000 illegal migrants vanish, Swedish police say

‘About 14,000 illegal migrants, who were awaiting deportation, simply disappeared off the radar, Swedish police told local media, adding they “don’t know where these asylum seekers are.”
At the end of October, Swedish police asked to enforce deportation of at least 21,748 people. Of these, 14 140 people registered by police as ‘wanted’ have vanished, police told Swedish Aftonbladet tabloid newspaper.
“We simply don’t know where they are,” Patrik Engström, head of the national border police, said.
The rest of the individuals –at least 7,608 people – remain in refugee centers, are in custody, or are living in separate accommodation, awaiting deportation.’

Sweden mulls shutting bridge to Denmark amid refugee crisis

The Swedish government is working on a bill that would allow it to close the Oresund Bridge connecting it to Denmark as an emergency measure, as Stockholm continues to struggle with an unending mass influx of refugees.
The proposal on the possible bridge closure is expected to be a part of a bill aimed at curbing the inflow of asylum seekers into the Nordic country of 9.6 million people. Sweden’s number of new refugees and migrants is approaching 200,000, which is twice as high as the previous annual record.
Apart from the potential bridge closure, a new set of measures also includes border controls as well as ID checks on buses, trains, and passenger ferries. Halting the bridge traffic is viewed as the most drastic measure, however, according to Swedish media.
The 8-kilometer-long bridge, which opened in 2000, connects the Danish capital of Copenhagen with Sweden’s third largest city Malmo and has been credited with boosting the economies of both countries by significantly reducing transportation expenses.
Being a combined road and rail bridge, it is a very busy transport route with 20,000 vehicles crossing it every day, and 7 million vehicles along with 12 million train passengers using it yearly, the Financial Times reports.
The plan proposed by the Swedish government, which is still in the works, proposes temporarily halting the road traffic and introducing extensive checks on the trains crossing the bridge. Additionally, all other motorways leading to Sweden could also be temporarily closed if this measure is implemented, the draft document leaked to local media states.
“A temporary closure of the bridge can provide another measure to reduce the risk that public order or internal security is affected as a result of the large influx of asylum seekers,” the document says, as quoted by the Sweden’s Dagens Industri newspaper.

Read today in the netversion of a Swedish daily, that the flood of immigrants has abated, due to the governments extraordinary measures, now it is "only" 3,000/week vs previously 10,000/week arriving asking for refugee status. Perhaps we can even get it down to a miniscule trickle of 2,000/week they speculated. Wonderful only 100,000 new refugees/year.

This is not just any TV program that Gina Dirawi, a Swedish broadcaster of Palestinian descent, will present. Tomorrow, as the world gathers around fireplaces and fir trees, Swedes will crowd around their television sets to tune into a program they’ve been watching since 1959.
The julvard, or Christmas host, serves as emcee for the seven-hour event, much like Dick Clark's hosting of US New Year's Eve coverage. It kicks off at 2:55 p.m. on the 24th, the main day of Christmas celebration in Sweden, with the host introducing the the 1958 Walt Disney Christmas special "Kalle Anka och hans vänner önskar God Jul" (“Donald Duck and his friends wish you a Merry Christmas”).
It sounds quirky and quaint. But it's always one of the most watched programs of the year, notes Sweden’s official website.
For 30 years, the show's host was Arne Weise, a white male TV broadcaster who became as closely associated with Swedish Christmas as Santa Claus is. In 2002, he retired; since then the host has changed each year. Who exactly will be selected as julvard, to accompany Swedes as they open presents and lay out smorgasbords of pickled herring or beetroot salad, is now a tightly guarded secret that’s bet on and debated around dinner tables.
The announcement always makes a splash. But when a Nov. 20 tweet named Ms. Dirawi, it rippled wider than usual. Some of it was because of her youth – the youngest host ever – but most of it was because of her Muslim background.
“We get criticism every year, but we don’t get criticism like that every year,” says Klara Svensson, the executive producer of the show.

Producers at public broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) are unapologetic about their choice. On the contrary, Ms. Svensson says it aligns with a modern nation that embraces minorities.
“Gina is a Muslim but always celebrated Christmas. She really loves Christmas,” says Ms. Svensson. “If you move to a different country or you are a refugee I think you have the right to celebrate whatever you want, whenever you want. If she wants to celebrate Eid and Christmas, that is her right."
Creeping defensiveness about Christmas
Christmas in Europe, with its fairy-tale markets and contagious cheer, has been much less fraught than in the US, where in recent years the “war on Christmas” has arrived with a perennial vengeance. Still the creep of a Christmas culture war is here.
At one school in Milan a headmaster recently moved its annual Christmas concert to January and renamed it a “winter concert” to account for Muslim pupils.
