I just became aware of this thread today. I just wanted thank PatColo for starting this thread three years ago, no less.
I will search through my files and see if I have any other free download book links that may be appropriate to submit here.
I wanted to suggest to some enterprising persons a new kind of business that I think might make some money.
Not only can the dumbed down general population no longer read and have even a less desire to read, but there are many people who have been avid readers all their lives who are now unable to read, for various reasons such as age, eye problems or other problems.
I personally would be happy to pay for audio books of the kinds of text book downloads that I see here in this thread.
A person once posted something converted from text to audio on Grizzom.blogspot.com. The audio was remarkably good, not the usual strange robot sounding audio that the programs often provide. I think it was done in BabbleFish. I think when using that program, one has a choice of "voices" to choose. The Grizzom post used a remarkably tolerable "voice" but I do not know the specific name of the the voice used.
This new business that I am suggesting could also allow people to pay to have a physical book sent to them on loan, then scanned into computer text, and then converted to good audio file to be purchased also by the book submitter. The audio produced could be sold to any and all interested parties / customers of the company, but the actual physical book would have to be sent back to the original customer. Anyway, some service like that.
Maybe could charge a regular monthly or yearly membership fee for the right to purchase these audio books that are made for sale by this company, as well as for the right to arrange for individual customized audio books prepared as described in last paragraph.
I have an eye condition that is undiagnosable and incurable, and it's becoming increasingly difficult for me to read. There are many many other people like me who would be potential paying customers of the suggested company. The world of ideas and knowledge and books is a big part of my life and I would love to read the books listed in this thread as well as some of the new ones I have purchased but cannot read.
Audio books of the kind listed in this thread and provided by very good, non-robot, sounding voice.
Even good human voice actually recording a book might be something providable too. For a human to be hired to read a book, you need probably a male deeper voice of someone who is a good reader who does not stumble and is able to put the emphasis on the correct words while reading. You also need someone who pronounces words correctly and can even make a good stab at correct pronunciation of foreign language phrases and names.
Does anyone think this is a good idea that could really make some money?

Dachsie: it's a swell idea overall. :) I cringe to think of how long it's been since I've read a real book, cover to cover! I rather like articles which make their point in a succinct way; book reviews; podcast interviews with authors; and even the amazon reader reviews of "real books", which can leave you remarkably conversant about a book, which you've never read! :D
But alas, we run into COPYRIGHT trouble, once we begin to CHARGE for the (re)-dissemination of the work of these books' authors. I'm frankly not sure about the legalities/liability of recording books to voice and putting them out for free; but I know for sure that doing so and charging for "your work", with no profit-sharing arrangement with the author, would be a bad idea.
You may be aware of the "Lindsey" guy who's been a caller to truth radio shows, and personality at Mami's Shit. He has done a bunch of books-to-voice recordings, and put them out for free:

Before it is over, well over fifty thousand American bodies - along with literally millions of Southeast Asian bodies - will litter the battlefields of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
For the record, the Tonkin Gulf Incident appears to differ somewhat from other alleged provocations that have driven this country to war. This was not, as we have seen so many times before, a 'false flag' operation (which is to say, an operation that involves Uncle Sam attacking himself and then pointing an accusatory finger at someone else). It was also not, as we have also seen on more than one occasion, an attack that was quite deliberately provoked. No, what the Tonkin Gulf incident actually was, as it turns out, is an 'attack' that never took place at all. The entire incident, as has been all but officially acknowledged, was spun from whole cloth. (It is quite possible, however, that the intent was to provoke a defensive response, which could then be cast as an unprovoked attack on U.S ships. The ships in question were on an intelligence mission and were operating in a decidedly provocative manner. It is quite possible that when Vietnamese forces failed to respond as anticipated, Uncle Sam decided to just pretend as though they had.)....

I had uploaded this yesterday and got a lot of suggestions to fix the volumes so that the narration and Hoffenberg clip were easier to hear. The book starts with Ostrovsky's service in the Israeli Defense Forces. After taking psychological and other preliminary tests, he rejects a potential job as a Mossad assassin but accepts a trainee katsa position.
He specifically addresses the suicide bombing of the US Marine compound in Beirut that killed several hundred US Marines in Lebanon. He says that Mossad learned of the time and location of the attack in advance through its network of informants but told only general information, without the specifics, to the US.
He attributes trafficking heroin as a source of raising funds for operations outside government regulation. He blames Mossad for assassinating Khadir, a PLO diplomat sent by Arafat to start peace negotiations with the Israeli government to prevent an invasion of Lebanon targeting the PLO.
Ostrovsky's's disillusionment grows, culminating in retirement after being scapegoated for a failed attempt at capturing top PLO officials.
The second half alleges other operations between 1971 and 1985, such as Operation Sphinx, in which Iraqi nuclear scientists were recruited while they were in France to gather information about Iraq's nuclear reactor Osiraq. Israel ultimately ends doing so by an Israeli air strike in 1981.
Israeli litigation
In 1990, Israel tried to stop the book sale with a preliminary injunction, arguing that publication would "endanger agents in the field". It was the first (and, to date, only) attempt of a sovereign state to stop a book from being published in the United States. Lawyers for Israel convinced Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael J. Dontzin to issue the injunction, preventing the publication and distribution of By Way of Deception.[2]
On September 13, less than 48 hours after the injunction had been issued, an appeals court threw it out. For the week of 7 October 1990,[3] the New York Times best seller list [4] rated the book #1 on its nonfiction list.[5]
