Sources told the Los Angeles Times that Johnson has no ties to terror groups and no known criminal history. He has lived in the Dallas area and has family members living in Mesquite, Texas, east of Dallas, the newspaper reports, citing federal law enforcement sources.
A black SUV was found at the scene registered to Delphene Johnson, who is Micah Johnson’s mother according to Facebook posts and public records, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reports. Live helicopter video from the news station showed police at her home in Mesquite.
The suspect is a veteran of the U.S. Army, but it is not clear when he joined the military and when he left, and on what terms.
Micah Johnson’s Facebook page provides few details about his life. In May, he posted a “Black Power” poster, one of the few images on his page
Police previously said two people were spotted getting into a Mercedes into downtown Dallas carrying camouflage duffle bags, the police chief said. The car was spotted by police and stopped on the highway. The people in the car were taken into custody. The chief said a woman was also arrested near El Centro College.
Police are not sure if any of those three people who are in custody are connected to the shooting.
One man who was marching during the protest, Mark Hughes, was incorrectly identified by police as a “person of interest” in the shooting, and his photo was distributed on Twitter by the department. Hughes was open carrying a rifle, which is legal in Texas, to exercise his Second Amendment rights, but he turned over the gun to a police officer after the shooting began so he would not be mistaken as a suspect. That moment was caught on video

Five Dallas police officers were killed Thursday night when a sniper opened fire on them at a rally against police brutality.
The gunman was identified as Micah Johnson, 25, a resident of the Dallas area. Police said he expressed a desire to kill white people, especially police officers, and anger over recent police shootings.
Three other people were taken into custody, but it's unclear whether there was more than one gunman.
Three of the officers who were killed have been identified.

Brent ThompsonBrent Thompson, 43, was a DART transit police officer since 2009 and is the first DART officer killed in the line of duty.
Thompson taught at the police academy, previously serving as a private contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan and was a grandfather.
He served in Iraq and Afghanistan helping to train local police forces. He had previously served in the Marines.
He was said to be in "great spirits" recently following his marriage to a fellow DART officer.
A second officer killed in the attack was identified as Michael Krol, 40. He was a member of the Dallas P.D. since 2007, previously serving as a Wayne County Corrections officer in Detroit before moving to Dallas.
The third officer to be identified reportedly served three tours in Iraq. Dallas police officer Patrick Zamarripa, 32, was a Mexican-American Navy veteran.
His stepmother told the Daily News that she texted him last night after she heard about the shooting, but got no response.
She said the family is devastated and that Zamarripa, who has a wife and a two-year-old daughter, "loved being a cop."

Defense officials confirm that Johnson had served as an Army Reservist until April of 2015.
Carlos Harris, who lives downtown, told the newspaper that the shooters "were strategic. It was tap, tap, pause. Tap, tap, pause," he said.

Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, was wearing body armor and toting an SKS semi-automatic assault rifle and a handgun when he started picking off cops in downtown Dallas Thursday night, a law enforcement source told CBS News.
Johnson was trained to kill — he served as a reservist for six years until 2015 and was deployed to Afghanistan between Nov. 2013 and July 2014, an Army spokeswoman told the Daily News.
Among the awards Johnson racked up during his service was the Army Achievement Medal.

Sharay Santora, who was at the rally, said the gunfire sounded like a string of firecrackers. Santora said after the first round of shots, there were a few minutes of calm, and then the firing began again.
A friend and former co-worker of Johnson's described him as a gun owner with military training who "was always very affected by the police stuff and had very strong feelings about being black."
Caitlyn Lennon, 27, said she worked with Johnson at a sandwich shop in Richardson from 2011-2013.
A commander in the Dallas Police Department said Johnson didn't act alone and described the shooting as a "conspiracy."
Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said several people were involved in the planning, logistics and execution of the coordinated attack.
Other people of interest were detained for questioning immediately after the attack. At a news conference at 7:30 a.m., city officials declined to discuss details about the suspects in custody.
"Now is not the right time," Mayor Mike Rawlings said.
