Microsoft volunteered to provide the technology to help tally up the results of Iowa’s caucus, free of charge… The contests in both parties are expected to go down to the wire… Pete D’Alessandro, who runs the Sanders operation in Iowa, last week questioned the tech giant’s motivations… Other aides to Sanders noted that Microsoft employees have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Clinton campaign, according to MSNBC. “You’d have to ask yourself why they’d want to give something like that away for free,” D’Alessandro said.The Sanders campaign’s suggestion that Microsoft may have financial interests at stake in the outcome of the race is true for both parties.

However, according to U.S. census data there are more than 11 million Americans with degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) who lack employment in these fields. In fact, U.S. schools are graduating two times more students with STEM degrees than are annually finding employment in these fields.
In a 2014 USA Today op-ed titled, “Bill Gates Tech Worker Fantasy,” labor experts explained that the tech labor market—contrary to Gates’s claims—is currently over saturated, which has resulted in lower wages for America’s tech workers:

In Florida, scores of Marco Rubio’s own constituents were laid off by Disney and were forced to train their low-wage foreign replacements brought in on H-1B visas. The American tech workers launched a discrimination lawsuit against Disney earlier this week.
As a result, Rubio has come under fire for being one of the most ardent champions of the cheap foreign labor program—having introduced his I-Squared bill, which would expand the H-1B program, as recently as last year.
The attorney for the Florida Disney tech workers, Sara Blackwell, blasted Sen. Rubio for his continued efforts to put the interests of his “corporate donors” ahead of his own constituents. “Sen. Rubio is a liar,” Blackwell told Breitbart in November, “I think Rubio lies. And the only motivation I can imagine he has to do so is the support he gets from his corporate donors.”
According to Open Secrets, the Walt Disney Corporation has been one of Rubio’s biggest financial boosters in the 2016 election— having donated more than $2 million. Disney CEO Bob Iger also co-chairs the Partnership For A New American Economy along with Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer, which has backed Rubio’s 2015 H-1B expansion bill.

Cruz has previously expressed his support for expanding the H-1B program– and even introduced an amendment to the 2013 Rubio-Schumer bill that would have resulted in a 500% increase of the H-1B program. During the Gang of Eight debate, Cruz said, “The best aspect of the so-called Gang of Eight bill is the reform that is found concerning legal immigration. I think it makes some positive steps with regard to legal immigration, but I don’t think it goes nearly far enough… if we want to improve high-skilled innovation in my view we should not do so by half measures. We should do so with a significant step that materially improves the status quo, and for that reason I’ve introduced this amendment to increase the cap by five hundred percent.” During the course of the 2016 race, however, Cruz has since changed his position. He has called for a temporary suspension of the program pending an investigation, and introduced a widely-praised reform plan to crack down on abuse.
In stark contrast to Rubio’s position, GOP frontrunner Donald Trump, who is self-funding his campaign, has taken a firm position against H-1B “job theft.” Trump has told Breitbart News that Rubio ought to “immediately rescind his sponsorship of the I-Squared bill and apologize to every Floridian for endorsing it… [as well as] return the money he [Rubio] has received from Silicon Valley CEOs and to donate the money to a charity helping unemployed Americans whose jobs Rubio has helped to destroy.

He added there is no such thing as a violation based on infrequent voting.
"Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa Caucuses," Pate said.
Cruz defended the mailers when asked about them, saying that the Iowa Republican Party has put out similar ones in the past.
"Listen, Matt Schultz, who is a former secretary of state, is a chairman of our campaign, put out a public statement saying these mailers are routine. That the Iowa Republican Party has done in the past, in past elections and I will apologize to nobody for using every tool we can to encourage Iowa voters to come out to vote," Cruz told reporters Saturday evening.
Donald Trump and Marco Rubio, Cruz’s two closest rivals in the state, also blasted the mailer.
"It's kind of an unusual way to end your campaign in a state," Rubio said. "It sounds like he's under a lot of pressure and maybe not reacting very well to it, which is problematic."
The Florida senator is circulating a similar mailer, framed as a "report card." However, his literature does not imply a "voting violation," nor does it list the voting frequency of neighbors by name.
Tom Hinkeldey, a resident of Alta, Iowa, said Cruz dragged "me and my neighbors’ names through the mud" by sending out the mailer.
"It was just a little perturbing that a candidate would send that out, thinking that it would, in any way, have the reaction that I should go vote for this guy," he said. "The people on that list are good people. He doesn't know them. He doesn't know our community."
Hinkeldey, who hasn’t caucused before, said he was undecided before the mailer, but now plans to caucus for Rubio.

Last year ended with a number of voter database breaches — from the Sanders/Clinton/DNC database kerfuffle to the discovery of the still-mysterious posting of some 191 million voter records online shortly thereafter.
But those concerns may pale in comparison to the fact that the nation is about to begin voting in Presidential primaries and caucuses using electronic voting systems and tabulators that have failed time and again, that remain vulnerable to both malfunction and malfeasance, and that are often impossible for the public to oversee in any meaningful way.

Joining us to discuss the voter database breaches as well as concerns about election integrity and oversight in early caucus and primary states such as Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada and beyond is Bev Harris of BlackBoxVoting.org.
Harris, the election integrity watchdog featured in HBO’s Emmy-nominated 2006 documentary Hacking Democracy, has been investigating and writing about those voter database breaches lately, including a new one that has just been discovered concerning tens of millions of additional voter records.
While voter registration databases actually contain public information, she explains, there are restrictions on their use, and they are not supposed to simply be posted publicly for download. “This stuff is not secure. It’ll probably never be secure,” she warns. “One of the things I did was really research how many of the breaches have occurred over time, and it’s a shocking number. You can’t secure this stuff.” As we discuss on today’s program, that point is something to keep in mind when you hear advocates of Internet Voting systems (the next nightmare that some hope to force upon American democracy) claim otherwise.
We then step through the differing voting processes used in each of the early voting states, with Harris explaining that completely unverified and/or unverifiable e-voting and tabulation systems — most of them hacked many times in the past — will once again be in use in every state in the union. Yes, even where hand-marked paper ballots are used, almost all of those ballots are tabulated by unverified computer systems.
“I’m not at war with a machine,” she explains. “I’m at war with no transparency. We have to be able to have some way to see and authenticate that count, before the ballots travel anywhere.”
Harris tells me: “The key here is not that there will never be a mistake, or never be fraud. The key is that the public has a right to accountability. If you can catch it, and do something about it — if you’re vigilant enough and doing a patriotic duty of vigilance — then that’s the whole point. When you start saying, ‘No, you can never see, you can never account for it,’ then you have a problem.”
We discuss how it was, in fact, public oversight of hand-counted paper ballots at GOP caucus sites in Iowa in 2012 which resulted in the correct results actually becoming known weeks later, long after the Republican Party misreported them on the night of the caucuses.
Transparency, however, is not quite as easy in other early voting states like New Hampshire (remember the unbelievably unverified mess there in 2008, when Hillary Clinton’s victory defied even Exit Polls taken on the day of the Primary?) and, especially, South Carolina (remember the unknown Alvin Greene’s 100% unverifiable and inexplicable victory in their 2010 Democratic U.S. Senate primary?)
“There’s not just one magic wand you can wave, but there are things to at least force some accountability into it,” Harris tells me, describing some of the ways election integrity advocates can try to force the issue a bit. Among her suggestions: “You can go [to the polling place at closing time] and snap a picture of what those [computer tabulated] results are with your cell phone and compare it with, at least, what they report” later on.
We cover a lot of ground in the conversation and I suspect we’ll be discussing this issue with her, and others, a lot more as the election year moves forward. But today’s show is a good place to begin.
