The 24-year-old accused of killing 12 and injuring 58 in a Colorado cinema last Friday sat mute next to a lawyer in the jury box rather than at the defence table. Apparently officials wanted to keep him as far as possible from the five family members who attended on behalf of three victims.
Judge William B. Sylvester advised him of his rights in the proceedings to follow and told him that there was “probable cause to believe you committed the offence of first-degree murder” and that he would continue to be held in solitary confinement without bond.
Holmes will re-appear next Monday to be formally charged.
The audiovisual feed from the courtroom failed constantly during the appearance and TV news broadcasters were often reduced to reporting on the technical difficulties rather than detailing the proceedings.
