They might have been there, but wouldn't/couldn't go into the theater because of the gas. (?)

Good question! People had to be poring out of that place, once they clued unto what was going on. But I do not buy them doing nothing for 20-30 minuets. Will try and post the news conference that was shown on CNN less than one hour ago, once I can find it.
Text here/ says also video but can not find it yet.

Isn't a gas mask standard SWAT equipment?

How do you do that when emergency exits open from inside out?
Supposedly someone is saying there was a guy that took a call during the movie then went to the emergency exit and possibly signaled someone. Who knows....

Yep, then if the police did show up that fast then they waited for him to finish shooting then walked out the back, gave himself up and was never shot at. Sounds very much like Columbine and like Virginia Tech.

It would not have taken long for the shooter to go through several magazines. You can pray and spray even being semi-auto, a bunch of lead in less than one or two minuets 20-30 round mags can be emptied very quickly.
Edit: One shot per second, time it yourself, one minuet and 60 shots semi-aimed down range easy to do.

??? Is this true? I know it's true about Columbine. I can attest, having gone through police training. Columbine changed active shooter response tactics. We were trained to go in asap and go directly to the active shooter to minimize loss of life. It's the most dangerous situation we were trained for.
Columbine was studied, what the police could have done better. Those changes became a standard (I believe) for law enforcement across the nation.
It's hard to imagine the first cops on scene would not go in immediately.

I would imagine that any organization that uses gas should have gas masks as standard equipment. So, my answer is that if it's not standard SWAT equipment, it should be.

More than likely the shooter was done with his shooting and trying to leave by the time the cops got there. See my above post.
