Patient dies in Placer County after receiving COVID-19 vaccine
Multiple agencies investigating cause of death
PLACER COUNTY, Calif. —
A person who received a COVID-19 vaccine died hours after receiving the dose, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say the person tested positive in late December and received the vaccine Thursday.

The county’s public health department did not administer the vaccine.
Officials said several agencies are investigating the cause of death.
"There are multiple local, state, and federal agencies actively investigating this case; any reports surrounding the cause of death are premature, pending the outcome of the investigation," the sheriff's office said.
On Monday, California Secretary of Health Dr. Mark Ghaly said state officials are aware of the case and are working closely with the Placer County coroner's office and county health officer.
"Some details are complex and worth further investigation and that's what we're doing," Ghaly said.
Ghaly said his confidence in the vaccine remains hgih.
"We are very experienced with reactions and even dire consequences related to clinical interventions, including vaccines," he said. "But we are looking at this very closely and still stand behind the data and overwhelming evidence that these vaccines are safe."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring reports of severe allergic reactions, but health officials say the risk of a severe reaction is “exceedingly rare.”
In a statement sent to KCRA, a spokesperson for the CDC said they are aware of reports that people died after receiving the vaccine, but said they are rare.
"These deaths are under investigation to verify information and determine cause of death. It’s important to remember that many adverse events, including death, following immunization are often coincidental – that means that while an adverse event may happen after getting vaccinated, the vaccine is not always the cause of it," according to the statement.

Placer County Public Health and the Placer County Sheriff-Coroner Division were recently notified of the death of an individual who tested positive for COVID-19 in late December.
The individual was administered a COVID-19 vaccine several hours before their death on January 21, 2021. The vaccine was not administered by Placer County Public Health. There are multiple local, state, and federal agencies actively investigating this case; any reports surrounding the cause of death are premature, pending the outcome of the investigation.
