Ebay-PayPal Question for the gang

I just won an auction for 19 SAEs, assorted early dates including two 1996s, for $600 and change. When I paid with PayPal I wasn't focused on the shipping method. I just got an email from the seller asking if I intended to select "standard shipping" as there will be no insurance and no tracking number. Do I need insurance if buying with PayPal? Won't PayPal refund me if the package does not arrive because of theft or getting lost? mamboni is confused? Doesn't every package get a tracking number?
If I should pay insurance, what's a fair number?
Thank you!

On ebay for that $$ I would definitely get it insured and a tracking #. Normally shipping includes a tracking # automatically. If you choose USPS (I think the safest) should be about 6 bux additional.

If they're using USPS they can opt to pay extra for delivery confirmation/tracking number/insurance. The tracking number is less than a buck. The insurance for a $600 purchase would be just over $7.
source: I done this before bro.

Pay for the shipping UPS with tracking, if it doesn't show up your covered. Paypal has come thru when some Eagles didn't make it thru the postal service, package was sliced and contents emptied. I got my money back, but the fact it happend makes you question buying from ebay.
Never sent and never received are hard to prove. It's a two way street.

Postal service tracking is bullshit, they will f#$k you. the hoops you will jump thru will be like having a rusty ice pick stuck in your eye.

 +1
I ordered something from ebay years back with the delivery confirmation and when I got the package, I found it to be slit open with the contents gone. The postal employees basically said that they couldnt do anything without the insurance
The tracking is about as useful as NORADs annual santa tracker for christmas

Congrats on scoring that deal including the two '96s.
I have some experience with buying PMs on feebay. I ALWAYS make sure there's USPS insurance along with delivery confirmation, even if it's less than $100 in FRNs involved.
As for PP making good, I did BIN on a couple of Phillys by the same seller (100% FB going back years) when gold was just under $900. This particular seller was apparently making his own 'last score' 'cause he never shipped the two Phillys. I made a claim to PP and got a full refund, although it took about 3 weeks, but got it all back nonetheless. Was subsequently contacted by an El Paso PD detective investigating the affair (seller had been located in El Paso) who I happily helped out as best I could.

not sure, but I think the only way to fully insure PMs for their value through transport with the USPS is via Registered Mail™, otherwise I think the maximum is $15

Stay on 'em. I suggest you be emphatic with the seller that insurance be applied and that you will pay the actual cost of the USPS insurance/delivery confirmation, therefore he needs to get with you forthwith so that you can send the amount for the insurance. What's the seller's FB? PP requires that you allow a specific amount of time for delivery, however if you're not hearing from the seller within 72 hours of the close then I'd initiate contact with PP and register my concerns.

On another note, I once purchased a couple of rolls of 90% quarters from a feebayer. The joker (apparently) merely threw the two PLASTIC rolls into a Priority Mail envelop with no packing, padding, NOTHING else. Priority Mail envelope arrived EMPTY - it was ripped open (difficult to tell whether it was intentional or accidental). Made a claim to PP and got a full refund.

paypal wont pay the seller unless you click on a tab to confirm delivery and that the item looks as expected. Check out the rating of the seller... in the worse case scenario, look for the "resolution center" tab and file a complain to get your $$ back
I sold a few things on ebay over the last 4 years and am very satisfied.

 Didn't know that - thanks!
The seller has 100% rating over 300 transactions - all over the last 60 days. He appears legit.

Give a bit of patience, not all people have time to dickstab all day on their computers. :)

USPS tracking is usually quite reasonable; I never had to file a claim through them though since the sender i.e. seller must make the insurance claim.

like I said you have to authorize paypal to unfreeze the $$ but if you are not happy with item, you will have to send it back to seller (see his return policy), then he will have to authorize paypal to unfreeze the $$ in your favor. Thats why ratings do matter. Sellers will rate you as a buyer too.
the resolution center will act as a 3rd party and force either the seller or the buyer to unfreeze the $$.
ps: always choose a delivery with a tracking number. it is in buyer interest to be able to prove that he did or didnt get the item. If the item is expensive, the shipping costs must include an insurance and generally are paid by either the seller or buyer. I sold lithographs for $600 worth once but made sure to include it in the price. Each seller establishes his own policies so to speak. So before clicking on the 'buy button', this is something one should be aware of.
you are welcome. :)

I wanted to thank all of you. The issue is resolved: the seller will ship with tracking and insurance. Silver Rocket Bitches was spot on with his $7 estimate.
Thank you all!
