Insane would be a best case scenario. Looks more to me like unrelenting Evil engaged in a war and that particular Evil just won't quit.
Logic/Reason appears to be an ineffective weapon against it. Deal it a decisive blow (or even when it appears to shoot itself in the foot - a la Covington) and it just keeps coming.
Evil took one of the greatest human inventions and turned it into a VERY effective weapon of war.
