No, they don't. Gated communities provide a FALSE SENSE of security.

A good friend of mine lives in a suburb of Dallas. It's a very nice, tidy, middle class neighborhood with nice, very well kept houses no more than 20 years old. In relatively close proximity is one of the worst areas of DFW full of pavement apes (less than a 15 minute drive on the freeway). His neighborhood has been getting hit with home burglaries, car burglaries, and carjackings. His next door neighbor was carjacked yesterday morning when he went out the door to go to work, two varmints pulled guns on him (obviously he wasn't paying attention to situational awareness). But get this - the local po-po advised him that the gated community nearby is getting hit harder than his neighborhood. The varmints are smart, they go to where the money is and the morons living there think they can relax and not have to be armed at all times because they live in a 'safe' gated community.

A gated community is a target rich environment, it might keep local clowns down, but the pro will be happy there.
