First and foremost, review and understand the 4 rules of gun safety. There are tons of videos that show examples of the 4 rules.
In an ideal and normal situation I highly recommend that you go to a range and rent different guns (calibers & brands) to shoot to see which feels the best in your hand. If you feel
you don't have the time and want to buy a gun before the Apocalypse, you still need to give us much more information.
Do you have the budget to buy multiple guns or only one?
Is the gun simply for home self defense?
Are you going to carry the gun?
Where are you going to carry the pistol? Purse, pocket, holster?
Inside the waistband or outside the waistband?
Thanks for all of this.
Yes, budget for more than one gun
Mainly thinking of home defense
Carry in purse
want to buy a gun before the Apocalypse hell show...Also worried that NJ Gov could just ban gun sales b/c of "pandemic"--pretty sure in one of Ron Paul's vids on corona, he mentioned Gov of Ohio banning gun sales.

“Democracy is also a form of worship. It is the worship of Jackals by Jackasses. It is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."

Shotgun or full sized semi-auto for home defense.
Smith & Wesson model 642 is a very popular .38 revolver for carry. I know a lady that carries one in her purse. Since it has an enclosed hammer it won't snag on anything. The downsides are it only holds 5 rounds and reloading a revolver in the highest stress situation will take longer than slapping another mag in a semi-auto.
.380 semi-auto pistols are also very popular for purse carry, but keep in mind that the general rule of thumb is that the smaller the gun, the more recoil. Many people also complain about the difficulty of racking the slide on many .380 pistols. My niece was given a Bodyguard by her boyfriend, but hates the thing. Again, that is just one persons opinion.
You also have to determine if you want a manual safety on the pistol. Many people, especially those to new to guns want that feature. I personally don't want anything extra (manual safety or decocker) on my pistols, but that's me. I also would recommend a single stack 9mm over the .380, but realize that might be too large for your purse.
The bottom line is that you have to get to a gun shop and/or range and see what is best for you regarding size, feel, and recoil. Take any specific recommendation as only a reference.
Good luck!

I was in New Jersey for a few days one time and I was packing a 357 Glock. If I were to go back there I'd still pack a gun but I'd do my best to keep it concealed and I'd do my best to avoid any situations that might attract the attention of a cop. When you're all alone at night there are no cops to protect you and you're on you own, law or no law it's best to be armed. When I was there I was out alone, in the dark, at night working and that's not good.

Just buy the newer Ruger LCPII model (not the old LCP model) that costs less than $300. Get it now while you still can. Worry about training and ponder all this other stuff later at your leisure. Phone your local gun stores and ask them if they have one IN STOCK.
New Jersey gun laws are some of the most restrictive in the United States. It is a “May Issue” state so a person must demonstrate a justifiable need to carry a firearm. In reality it acts more like a “No Issue” state for regular citizens as permits are very difficult to obtain. Some of these restrictive laws are being tested in the courts. Permits are issued to both residents and non-residents. A firearms training course is required for new applicants and they must be at least 21 years or older.
