Bill Burns had a 33-year career at the State Department under both Republican and Democratic presidents and speaks fluent Russian. If the people in the background of Joe Biden wanted an intelligence operative to trigger a specific result from Russia, there’s no one more strategically perfect for the job than CIA Director Bill Burns.

The article by Beinart is mainly focused on pointing out the irreconcilable nature of Joe Biden implying Ukraine could join NATO, while his own CIA Director has a history of giving serious warnings emphasizing the “brightest of all red lines” about that specific point.

Mariupol is surrounded, but all fighting is taking place on its outskirts. There has not been a direct assault yet; negotiations on the exit of civilians are still ongoing. But the city will be stormed regardless.


Lugansk province: The Ukrainians are preparing to withdraw from Severodonetsk and Lisichansk.


Kharkov province: The Russian armed forces are advancing towards Izyum. After Izyum, they'll take Slavyansk. It is very likely that this will cause the encirclement and liquidation of parts of the Ukrainian army.


East of Kiev: Reinforcements continue to arrive at Brovary, but there are no operations yet. Sumy, Chernigov, Konotop, and Akhtirka are still besieged.


West of Kiev: Russian reinforcements are arriving.


Kherson was quiet today after being fully captured yesterday.


The second round of negotiations will be held tomorrow.

Kharkov: The Russian command probably thought they would take over Kharkov, with its military bases intact, without a shot fired. Now it's clear the enemy won't surrender until they're defeated on the ground, and the choice has been made to seriously target military infrastructure instead of trying to preserve it.


I cannot confirm the rumors that an offensive has been launched to link up with the southern front at Zaporozhya.


Sumy and Chernigov are being left alone for now. There are no reports of battles.


Kiev-East: The Russian offensive on Boryspil has yet to begin.


Kiev-West: Fighting has been continuing without any real results, but I predict that some moves will be made later today. There's no time to waste; the enemy is pulling up all its remaining reserves and forming new units. The goal is the same: surround Kiev.
