UK minister says waving Palestinian flag ‘may not be legitimate’ in Britain

The United Kingdom’s Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has told police in England and Wales that waving the Palestinian flag may in some instances “not be legitimate, such as when intended to glorify acts of terrorism”.

The right-wing minister, known for her anti-immigration rhetoric, also said on Tuesday that “chants such as: ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free’ should be understood as an expression of a violent desire to see Israel erased from the world” and asked police to investigate whether its use could be a racially aggravated criminal act.

Palestinians and their supporters say that the chant is a message of support to Palestinians living in Israel as well as the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

Braverman’s letter comes in the midst of a growing attempt to crack down on pro-Palestinian speech and protests after Hamas’s attack on Israel on Saturday, with protesters waving Palestinian flags in several countries being accused of anti-Semitism, an accusation Palestinian supporters have angrily rejected.
