    Machetes & Knives

I need some new ones and am not familiar with the different brands. I don't want to overpay.

I would like to pick up a machete and a hunting knife and I think several of you here know a great deal about knives, so please help educate me. TIA

The Woodman's Pal is very nice. If you are looking for something very cheap but still works good, you might try Harbor Freight. For about $5 a piece (or less with coupon). I have several...good for trade and resale. I saw them at the gun show for more than double and they were selling.

If you want cheap, I cannot help you.

If you want quality, it's made in USA, Germany, Switzerland, and often, Japan. Brand is not as relevant, provided they're made in a First World country...just pick the style and features you like. Many old brands are now made in Chinkland, and their formerly respectable name doesn't mean sh*t.

I'm not really into knives, and only have small "multi-tools." But I'm quite happy with Leatherman, Victorinox, and Wenger when I've looked at their products (all USA- or Switzerland-made, I believe).

As "good" as the old Ginsu kitchen knives.

My current field knife is a Bark River Bravo 1.
Great Knife, solid build and does everything I need it to do.

I have a couple of fancier knives (Randall) received as gifts over the years, but they never make it to the field.
I'll eventually get around to selling \ trading them.

You can check out this site for info - but shop the net for pricing.

got some good ones at garage/ estate sales. usually need rust cleaned off and a sharpening. Chinese made generally crapola, soft steel, porrly fitted plastic handle. Older milsurp are good to find sometimes.
