    Killer CA cops arrested

Law enforcement, attorney among 9 arrested in man's death

    PAUL ELIASAug 15th 2015 8:29AM

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A long and largely forgotten death investigation in California's Central Valley has led to a vast and unexpected set of arrests that included three current and former Highway Patrol officers and a prominent defense attorney.

They were among nine people arrested in the 2012 disappearance and killing of Korey Kauffman, stemming from the belief that he was stealing the attorney's antiques, law enforcement officials said at a news conference Friday in Modesto, California.

Those arrested either played a part in the killing of the 26-year-old Kauffman or helped cover it up and misled investigators, the officials said.
Kauffman was reported missing in April 2012. His body was found by hunters in August 2013 in rural Mariposa County near Yosemite National Park.

Modesto attorney Frank Carson orchestrated the killing and enlisted the help of two brothers who own a liquor store in Turlock, investigators with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said.
Carson believed Kauffman and others were stealing valuable antiques from storage containers on his property, and he wanted to stop the thefts by sending a message, investigators said.

Kauffman was on his way to steal from Carson when he disappeared, according to a 326-page court filing authorities used to get arrest warrants.
Carson's attorney, Percy Martinez, said his client is innocent and his arrest was politically motivated.

Carson ran unsuccessfully for district attorney last year. He has been under investigation since Kauffman disappeared, Martinez said. Investigators searched Carson's property in 2012.

"We welcome the opportunity to fight this in court," Martinez said.

The CHP officers were all associated with the brothers and the Turlock liquor store.

CHP officers Scott McFarlane and Eduardo Quintanar are suspected of obstructing the investigation. They are accused of lying about their involvement with the liquor store and the two brothers who own it.

Quintanar told one of the brothers to tell another suspect to check under his car for police tracking devices, investigators said.
Former CHP Officer Walter Wells is suspected of murder.

"The entire department and I are appalled at the mere thought that one former and two current employees played any role in this incident," CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said.
Wells left the CHP several weeks ago, and the other two officers have been placed on administrative leave, Farrow said.

Carson's wife, Georgia Geanette Defilippo, is also accused of participating in the killing. Defilippo's daughter was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and being an accessory.
All of the suspects remained jailed Friday.

4 California Cops Arrested Over Claims They Brutally Beat 13 Children at Bootcamp for At-Risk Youth
BY MARIA CODER 08/06/2015 AT 12:00 PM EDT

Four California police officers have been arrested over claims that they turned a tough-love bootcamp for at-risk youth into a brutal, abusive hell.

Thirteen children, age 12 to 17, were allegedly slapped, kicked, stomped and beaten bloody by the officers, who worked a drill instructors at the camp, the Associated Press reports. One teen one suffered a broken hand, according to the AP.

Leadership, Empowerment and Discipline Camp is a one-week program at Camp San Luis Obispo, a California Army National Guard Military post. It is designed to foster leadership and help with discipline, with the goal of reducing family conflict at home, according to organizers.

The alleged victims attended the camp May 17 to 24.

The San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Office investigated the camp and the officers for more than two months after the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services contacted authorities on May 28 with abuse claims.

Initially seven children came forward to report that they were abused, according to Greg Owen, a lawyer for the children and their families.

Owen claims his clients were given towels to wipe blood off themselves after beatings. He also said they were told they'd be away from their families for three months, not one week, and that their parents didn’t want or love them.

Huntington Park officers Marissa Larios, 36, and Patrick Nijland, 47, and South Gate officers Carlos Gomez-Marquez, 31, and Edgar Gomez, 35, were arrested on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Office.

The release notes 13 victims – boys and girls – all ranging between 12 and 17 years in age; there were close to 40 children enrolled. A phone call to the sheriff's office was not immediately returned on Thursday.

The four suspects posted bond and were released. It's unclear if they've obtained lawyers.

"We really take no pleasure in arresting members of the law enforcement profession. But at the end of the day, we realize that no one is above the law," sheriff's spokesman Tony Cipolla, told the AP.

Los Angeles cop arrested for setting girlfriend’s hair on fire after beating her

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was charged with aggravated assault and domestic battery for allegedly attacking his girlfriend before setting her hair on fire, the Orange County Register reported.

Prosecutors said 33-year-old Alejandro Flores attacked the woman on June 28 inside their Buena Park residence after an argument concerning their child’s pacifier. The deputy is accused of pushing her into a wall before punching her and grabbing her neck.

Flores then allegedly dragged the woman into the kitchen and turning on a gas burner as he held her over the stove, causing her hair to catch on fire. He was also charged on Monday with false imprisonment and dissuading a witness for threatening to harm the woman if she notified authorities.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the woman escaped with the child the day after the attack, slipping out of the home after Flores went to work and calling local police.

OC Weekly reported that, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, Flores allegedly hit the woman and broke her nose last October, in an incident that went unreported at the time.

The sheriff’s department said Flores, a seven-year veteran of the department, had been “relieved of duty.” He is currently listed as part of the Court Services/Transit Bureau. If convicted, the suspect faces up to 25 years and eight months in prison.
