Because of the respective target markets. The technology can do either.

Eguchi Aimi looks very, very real. Hatsune Miku is marketed to the anime crowd, gorillaz to the american/european crowd. In animation, almost anything is possible.

I would be very interested to look at the machines that run this hologram. What is their projection style? Can they display the hologram in any medium? How large can they get? Interesting questions to look at when we consider PsyOps, moving forward.

Could have any of us "robbing a bank" or "shooting the President" and eye-witnesses would swear we were there.

Well if that ever happens, the tell tale sign will be the enormous amount of video projection equipment in the area. There isn't a way to create a "stand alone" version of a hologram. What you didn't see in that video is all of the equipment about the size of a house doing all the digitization and video processing to render a "life like" image in holographic space.

Ohh and I forgot to mention, they can only produce said holograms at night. Another sign it's a Hologram. They haven't figured out a way to do it in broad day light. I doubt there is a way in the foreseeable future. Reason being is that sunlight has all the colors, and for all intents and purposes can outshine anything we can produce. It's like trying to project the color red in holographic space, within in a "white" light. Unless you can over power and separate the color it isn't going to project.
