His pistol was useless, too:
Sommer then grabbed his pistol and turned to confront the bear.
"It bit my thigh, ran his claws through my wrist and proceeded to attack my head," Sommer recalled Tuesday.
He still had his pistol in his hand and was going to shoot the bear in the neck when it swatted his arm down, Sommer said.
"Just like that it stopped. He stopped biting me, he got up and started to run away," said Sommer, who splits his time among Idaho, Missouri and Florida.

I imagine there are times when having a dog would help. You would be alerted a second or two earlier, giving you time to draw. But sometimes a dog will walk ahead and get into trouble with a predator and when chased, run home to daddy, bringing him to you.

Thanks hoarder. From the article, the bear spray used by his buddy saved the guy's life. It initially slowed down the charge by the bear, then while he was getting mauled, his buddy used the spray and it chased the bear away before the bear could kill him.
It sounds like bear spray works and has it's uses, though I think a combo of spray and pistol would be ideal. That's what I intend to use, spray and a pistol as a backup when in bear country.
life is good.
It's not uncommon for bears to maul and run, so it's uncertain that the mace did it. Sure didn't hurt.
no bears for many of us - how effective is it on negroes?

To revive the subject of bears, we had an interesting incident about 60 miles from me. Fool animal lover tried to rescue injured big Black Bear.

Tribal officer shot and killed it. The Feds don't seem to bother the Injun reservations, so lots of things there are handled sensibly. On the "rez", every gas station seems to sell guns and ammo.
