First time gold buyer - American Gold Eagle Coin

    Buying
    American Gold Eagle Coin - 1 oz - $1350.

From what I've research so far LearCapital is a good place to buy it from.

Any recommendations on this? Is this a good way to start out as a first time buyer?

You have not a clue of spot prices, eagles do carry a premium but not that dam high.

Ampex is more in the ball park in general for fair sorta honest pricing.

A 1 oz gold eagle is always a nice start. $1,318 right now. Free shipping over $1,000

If you can find better prices go for it.

California Numismatic Investments is 100% trustworthy, I've dealt with them for many years

Sorry and maybe if need to apologize, been a while since I have bought or sold, so my thoughts are dated. Tho state issued (country's) gold, holds better prices than plain jan rounds.

In general, by my limited experience

Pay attention to the 'buy/sell' spread. It will clue you in to how ethical the dealer is.

Dogman suggested I elaborate and it is probably a good idea. The buy/sell spread is the difference between what the company will buy your metals and the price they will pay to sell you metal. The closer these two prices are, the more likely you are to be getting a fair shake. As with any purchase though, you must practice 'due diligence'. If you are taken down the garden path, it is only because you failed to do your homework. Some of the shadier outfits have advertised very low prices but failed to deliver for months and even gone so far as to never deliver. I think they are waiting for prices to drop before sending the metal.

Thank you, and also dam fine advice to and for the unwashed.

Translation is do not buy at a price that you can not sell for dam near the same price at the time, depending on spot prices (yes there may be loss, but if spot rises you win) Both hold that gold and silver eagles have better value than generic rounds. Canadian stuff in some ways is better because of the purity vs american but not all the time.

$1328 at JM Bullion, also with free shipping: https://www.jmbullion.com/1-oz-american-gold-eagle/

Lear Capital is good at broadcasting commercials, but I wouldn't ever buy physical from them, their premiums are too high.

Thank you for the advice. I changed my mind on the gold. I decided to start out in silver.

I ordered a 10 oz silver bar from silver.com. They had the cheapest prices through some research that I could find.

Also more comfortable starting out at a lower point. 10 oz silver bar was around $180.

I'm going to post in silver before I order again, but I just wanted to get something right away.
