I call this a 'ping'. In mathematics it might be called a dirac delta function. This is a pulse. You excite the system with some input to try to gauge what the response will be. While this sounds entirely academic the real world consequences can have quite an impact. As an example, don't go into the Blue Oyster Men's Club and announce you are heterosexual.
