Interesting passage taken from The Country Justice by Michael Dalton published in 1618. The last sentence is almost a Freudian slip (except Freud wouldn't be born for another 240 years). I think he meant to say "the preventing of the breach of peace" and instead the author places prime importance to the office of Justice of the Peace on their prevention of justice.

The concept of Peace is defined and the role of Justices of the Peace is defined.

This material is interesting because some Nazi general put peace into context. The invader comes into a land offering peace. The defenders of the land offer war. In the justice system peace is the principle if not the only goal. But peace can only be damaged by your presence. If you aren't present you cannot injure the peace. If you are looking for a reason to ignore a summons this is it. They want you in the courtroom so you can be charged with violating the peace. Far preferable to keep your distance and let 'em be peaceful.
