The thing with multiple currencies for one country is that it is an illusion. Multiple currencies produce multiple countries and the one you choose to belong to is the one whose folding money you carry in your wallet.
An analogy is the Iowa treasurers act of 1866 where each county treasurer is instructed to keep two sets of books, one being specie (gold/silver) and the other being federally issued notes of paper. This action 150 years ago has resulted in a society that only recognizes paper money and dismisses specie. What you use as money is the only connection society needs to declare that you are subject to their laws.
This issue is not recognized as being of any significance by most of the population but it boils down to the only issue of importance.
The allure of being able to print your own money isn't something easily given up.

In Italy it probably means that anyone who opts for it mysteriously contracts anthrax.
There are those of us who think gold and silver are money, and paper is the illusion.

I'm not sure anything with the news leads to re-adoption of a local currency, but a willingness to work with persons who truly hate the one they're forced to work with.
Italians are like pros at that type of torture.
