So I've read a bit more on this, and apparently here's what's happening. The current administration wants to immediately deport illegals caught sneaking across the border, but due to Obama era legislation making it illegal to deport illegals who claim asylum, any such illegals would be arrested, given a court date to defend their claim of asylum, and then be released. This became known as "catch and release." Of course, essentially none of the illegals would show up for their day in court (obviously), but just disappear and remain as illegals in our country. The Trump administration isn't playing that game anymore, but because they legally can't deport the "asylum" seekers until they've had their day in court, after they're arrested, they're incarcerated until their court date, ensuring they don't disappear into our country. And, just like when any other parent gets arrested for any other crime and gets thrown in jail, their kids don't go to jail with them (funny none of the liberals are crying about "breaking up families" when US citizens are incarcerated and taken from their kids). But there are no other parents to take care of the illegals' kids, so they go into these detention/day care centers to be fed and taken care of until their parents' get their court date and either get deported or not.
Not saying there's nothing shady going on (likely many of the kids are disappearing for who knows what, never to be seen again), but the official explanation does make sense.
