    Re: Benefits of Turmeric

Glass, is this you MOOD which has been so roller-coastery? Or was there some "observable" physical ailment you were medicating, in which case only disclose what you feel proper.

I didn't feel a whit of difference either from my eating say 1-3 G's/day turmeric powder. Overlapping this new turmeric consumption & beginning around the same time, I've been taking these "Purlina II" touted as a detox/liver-cleanse supplement, which I bought in Thailand, and I could only find sites in Thai language describing it, IE
    http://www.thaimarketshare.com/produ...?productid=382
    which translate.google.com says says:

    Purlina II (Perry Catalina II).

    Ingredients in 1 capsule.

    L - Glutathione 150 mg glutathione
    Choline 100 mg.
The cast of three Spirulina 80 mg
    Turmeric Extract 50 mg
    L - BSS Caffeine 30 mg
    L - 30 mg Methyl O'Neill
    L - Glutamine 20 mg
    Vitamin B 3 20 mg
    Chromium Chelate 6.5 mg
How Nick Thomas L. Pan Zhi 6 mg
    Vitamin B6 2 mg
    Vitamin B 2 1.7 mg.
    Vitamin B1 1.5 mg
    Vitamin B12 2 mcg.
    Folic Acid 200 mcg.

Dose: Dosage 1 tablet before bedtime.
^ about 50 cents a tablet- I don't think I'll buy another box after these run out. I get plenty of B-complex, been eating turmeric straight recently, & most those other thing I have no clue about, guess I could goog-em.

Thing is, there was no known, observable health issue I've been seeking to remedy by taking any of the above- I've just gone on a little liver cleanse kick recently, really just stemming from "guilty conscience for past sins" namely drinking myself silly a few times in past lives. I've seen/felt absolutely no diff this past ~month now taking these "herbal remedies". And they're a little too spendy to just take without any "cause" - except to imagine they're acting prophylactically (preventing)... in which case I'd like to get them straight from well-chosen foods, prolly cheaper and more effective anyways.

Glass, listen to this guest's spiel, she's big on IODINE being the root of a bunch of shite which Western med overlooks, or prescribes nonsense for etc- a big one was how it affects even MOOD,

    Re: Benefits of Turmeric

PC my mood does get affected when I get this ill feeling. It's amazing how much it can impact.

The main point of my post was not to hypocondriac but to say that the ideas and suggestions shared on this forum such as the Lipsomal and the Tumeric have made a huge contribution to my feeling better and continuing to improve over time. I have had a lot of time to get ill so I expect an equal amount of time to get better. The rate of improvement I feel is amazing.

It's been a couple steps forward and one step back but over time the improvement is there. The roller coaster ride I mentioned. If other people are trying these things because they feel poorly then my advice is to stick at it. Even if you feel great initially then it tapers off and you start to feel poorly again, don't abandon the things you have been taking (unless its making you way worse), keep at it and things like feeling better should come back to you.

It's been working for me. As to Tumeric. I think this stuff is very interesting. Only been taking a short while but it has a kind of easing effect on my stomach. For now it's part of the program.

Groundbreaking Study Finds Turmeric Extract Superior to Prozac for Depression

    Tuesday, 23 July 2013 10:11

'A new study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research has confirmed for the first time in a randomized, controlled clinical trial that the primary polyphenol in turmeric known as curcumin is both safe and effective in treating serious states of depression.

The research was performed at the Department of Pharmacology, Government Medical College, Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India, and involved patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD). The objective of the trial was to compare the efficacy and safety of curcumin with fluoxetine (Prozac) in 60 patients diagnosed with MDD. Subjects were randomized to receive either a six week treatment with fluoxetine (20 mg) and curcumin (1000 mg) individually or their combination.'

    Re: Benefits of Turmeric

So with all this news about turmeric/curcumin as miracle herb, I've been asking the next natural question: how can I capitalize on this?

Startpage'd about farming it. This came up, from India. Bear in mind, re the article's varying between acres & hectares: an acre is ~0.4 hectare, so a hectare (100M x 100M) is ~2.5 acres:

A former white collar employee harvests success from turmeric

    M. J. Prabu

    Busthani in his turmeric field
[oh, yeah, that's a helpful pic! /sarc -PC]

About 17 tonnes of fresh turmeric was harvested from an acre

Mr. Muhammed Busthani, from Koduvally in Kozhikode district of Kerala, does not claim to be an experienced farmer, but a casual chat with him can make one realise that the man’s knowledge in the subject is quite deep rooted.

His interest, particularly in turmeric, is surprising when he asserts: “Among all crops turmeric is the least affected by pests and infestations.”

    No clue

On return to his home town after leaving a private sector job in New Delhi, Mr. Busthani was planning to venture into business.

But he was totally clueless on where to start. His friends floated many ideas, but he was all the more confused.
It was a meeting with an expert at the Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, and an old acquaintance, which helped him to realize that agriculture was his next calling.

In February 2011, he, along with his five friends, attended a three-day seminar and technology showcasing conducted at the Institute under the aegis of National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) of ICAR.
That was a turning point in the life of Mr. Busthani and his friends.

“After attending various sessions in the seminar and hearing the success stories of farmer participants, we decided to grow turmeric,” he recalls.

Initially, they booked one tonne of seeds of Prathibha turmeric variety from a farmer delegate in the seminar. The friends formed a trust and took one acre land on lease at Sultan Bathery, Wayanad, and thus Bucca Farms was born.

From that one acre plot the team harvested around 17 tonnes of fresh turmeric in January 2012.

“We dried about 100 kg of Prathibha turmeric and powdered it for domestic use. After that, the home made dishes were all in a different taste. When my wife pointed out the superiority of turmeric powder, I thought of cultivating it on commercial scale,” he recalls.

    Exploring options

He took the appreciation seriously and explored the opinions of the neighbouring housewives — a sort of survey study.

All the neighbours who used Prathibha turmeric for cooking endorsed the ‘magic’ of Prathibha turmeric powder.

This year, the friends leased out around 18 acres of land at Pazhayangadi near Vellamunda in Wayanad district of Kerala and the entire area was planted with the remaining Parthiba seeds.

Today, Bucca Farms may be the largest farm growing a single variety of turmeric in Kerala. The farmers adopt the production packages recommended by IISR.

The operations including the fertilizer applications are targeted to get a yield of 320 tonnes. IISR scientists’ team has developed specific fertilizer recommendations to obtain a fixed yield from a unit area of land, known as ‘targeted yield’.

As the crop is showing good health and uniform growth, the farmers are expecting a yield somewhere near the targeted levels.

    Tonnes per hectare

“Maturing in 225 days under rainfed conditions, Prathibha gives an average yield of 39.12 tonnes per hectare. Relatively higher levels of curcumin (6.25per cent), oleoresin (16.2per cent) and essential oil (6.2 per cent) make this variety a hot choice for industrial, medicinal, and culinary purposes.

“The variety is proven to give 6 to 7 per cent of curcumin under Kerala conditions,” says Dr. B Sasikumar, Principal Scientist of the institute who developed it more than 10 years back.

“The Prathibha variety, which was released in the year 1996, has proved to be more adaptable to different states of India like Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab etc, owing to its better phenotypic plasticity and other favourable conditions,” says Dr. M Anandaraj, Director, Indian Institute of Spices Research.

With his two years of experience of turmeric cultivation, Mr. Busthani is now aware of the problems of farming in the state — labour shortage and high labour costs.

    Remedy

And he has a remedy too for this malady — farm mechanization. In fact, one of the major labour requirements for turmeric in the state is for bed-making for planting. With the help of local skilled workers, he converted a tractor mounted disc plough into a bed maker.

“Though the topography of the area was undulating; we could make uniform beds for planting turmeric in the entire 18 acres land using the bed-maker. It helped us to save about 300 labourers’ work,” he adds.

The farmer is also contemplating going in for available modern techniques in other farm operations so as to bring down the cost of production.

“We are working on a tractor mountable device to harvest the crop in the coming season,” he adds.

He was also one of the farmers identified for scientific cultivation of ginger (varada) under the institutes’ NAIP project on multi-enterprise farming models to address the agrarian crisis of Wayanad, Kerala in 2011.

Turmeric Surpasses Mouth Wash for Oral Health: Gingivitis, Mouth Cancer, and More

The powers of some foods to heal and nourish are so impressive and varied that these foods should be included in our weekly if not daily diets without exception. In recent years, modern science has uncovered so many remarkable qualities in turmeric in particular for the spice’s amazing potential to prevent and heal various health issues. Some research even shows how turmeric can boost oral health greatly, offering support for issues like gingivitis, mouth cancer, and much more.

The health benefits of turmeric are amazing, with several studies connecting turmeric and oral cancer treatment and prevention. One of the more recent studies indicates turmeric can reverse precancerous changes in the mouth. As GreenMedInfo reports, there are also more than a dozen studies linking it to oral cancer cell death. Recently, researchers revealed that nanoparticles loaded with turmeric extract could actually kill oral cancer cells that had proven resistant to chemotherapy treatment.

Though turmeric is most commonly thought of as a curry spice, it’s versatile and can be added to anything from fish and eggs to smoothies and salads. Further research indicates the more time turmeric spends in your mouth, the healthier that mouth might be.

Last year, in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology, a study showed that turmeric could be as, if not more, effective as a traditional mouthwash in the treatment of gingivitis.

Gingivitis is a periodontal disease characterized by bad breath, bleeding, and inflamed gums. Left untreated it can lead to more destructive periodontal disease. Generally, mouthwashes using chlorexidine are used to treat this condition. And while complications involving this compound are rare, they can include anaphylactic reactions.

The study had subjects rinse their mouths twice daily with either a 0.1% curcumin (turmeric) extract mouthwash or a traditional mouthwash solution using 0.2% chlorexidine. Despite the chlorexidine solution being twice as concentrated as the turmeric solution, the turmeric solution outperformed the traditional mouthwash in all three measurements. The turmeric reduced plaque, gingivitis symptoms, and bacterial activity at rates greater than the traditional mouthwash.

Despite this, the researchers, “in the characteristically conservative style of academia”, suggested turmeric mouthwash had “comparable anti-plaque, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties” as the traditional chlorexidine mouthwash.

Although the researchers didn’t come out and say turmeric was more effective than the traditional mouthwash, their numbers spoke for them. Plus, when you consider all of the health benefits of this brightly hued root, the benefits of such a mouthwash could be multiplied when you swallow it after your rinse!

Turmeric: A Wellness Promoting Tonic At Low Doses, Research Reveals

    Monday, December 02, 2013 | 3 comments

    by Sayer Ji

Over the years, there has been plenty of research performed on the value of natural substances in treating human diseases, but very little has been conducted on the effects of commonly used supplements and/or food components such as spices in already healthy people to improve their well-being.

All the more reason why a study published in 2012 in the Nutrition Journal titled, "Diverse effects of a low dose supplement of lapidated curcumin in healthy middle aged people," holds great interest among those on the fence about using dietary supplements to improve the quality and perhaps length of their lives, but for which clinical proof is lacking.

The study was conducted in healthy middle aged people (40–60 years old) with a low dose of curcumin (80 mg/day) in a fat soluble (lipidated) form. Curcumin is the primary polyphenol found in turmeric (3% concentration by dry weight), which gives the root its bright saffron color. Two groups of 19 subjects were given either curcumin or placebo for 4 weeks. Blood and saliva samples were taken before and after the 4 weeks and analyzed for the following blood and saliva measures relevant to health promotion:

    • Blood plasma levels of triglycerides and cholesterol concentrations (mg/dl).
    • Blood plasma concentrations of nitric oxide and soluble intracellular adhesion molecule (sICAM).
    • Blood plasma concentrations of myeloperoxidase (ng/ml) and C-reactive protein (mg/L x10).
    • Saliva activities of amylase (U/L) and antioxidant status (uM of copper reducing equivalents).
    • Blood plasma activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (U/L) and beta amyloid protein (pmoles/L).

The positive results were reported as follows:

    • Curcumin lowered triglycerides, but not cholesterol (note: lowering cholesterol may harm human health).
    • Curcumin increased plasma contents of nitric oxide, a molecule that can work against high blood pressure, as well as lowering plasma concentrations of sICAM, a molecule linked to atherosclerosis.
    • Curcumin raised plasma myeloperoxidase concentrations, without raising C-reactive protein and ceruloplasmin values – a sign of normal and inflammation-related neutrophil function.
    • Curcumin reduced salivary amylase activities, which are an indicator of sympathetic nervous system stress.
    • Curcumin raised salivary radical scavenging capacities, an indicator of reduced oxidative stress.·
    • Curcumin reduced plasma contents of beta amyloid protein, a marker for brain aging and Alzheimer's disease.
    • Curcumin reduced ALT liver enzyme activities, a marker for liver injury.

The study authors noted that, "in apparently healthy individuals, a relatively low dose of a specific curcumin preparation can exert a variety of health promoting effects." They pointed out that in previous human intervention studies using curcumin much larger doses were used in people who were already suffering from health problems. What was unique about their findings was that, "the wide variety of potentially health promoting effects seen in the present study suggests that curcumin can produce benefits in people without immediate disease states." [emphasis added]

What is so encouraging about this study is that unlike much of the research that now exists using natural substances and/or dietary interventions to improve the condition of subjects with already serious diseases, we now have solid evidence that curcumin has wellness-promoting properties. This is a different concept than 'disease-fighting,' which participates in a war-like mentality and implies that the body must be subjected to aggressive, heroic and sometimes dangerous treatments to beat it back into a state of symptom reduction or symptom remission.

The point, of course, is to prevent disease from taking hold in the first place by supporting the body's many complex systems naturally. Curcumin, and the whole turmeric root from which it derives, has a remarkable ability to modulate numerous pathways in the body simultaneously, almost as if by some intelligent hand. This new study only further confirms why this plant has been appreciated as a sacred healing ally for thousands of years, and why it may play a vital role in the modern world both in protecting us from many life-threatening illnesses and acting as a body wide tonic, even when consumed in moderation, or in culinary doses.

    Re: Benefits of Turmeric

I have been eating turmeric, ( mostly 2 teaspoons in water and making a paste/ slurry out of it ) since my younger brother was diagnosed with throat cancer, and my older sisiter died from it r and my dad died from it, all have/had it, I figure prevention?

On Tuesday, the British Journal of Cancer published a propitious study from Cork Cancer Research Centre ("CCRC") at the University College Cork in Ireland that found that curcumin-a compound in the curry spice turmeric-begins killing esophageal cancer cells within 24 hours. According to the CCRC study, curcumin ostensibly acts as a free radical scavenger that triggers a lethal cell death signal that causes cancerous cells in the throat to digest and kill themselves.CCRC states that currently less than 20 percent of people survive throat cancer beyond five years. But now, Dr. Sharon McKenna, the lead study author at CCRC says: "These exciting results suggest that scientists could develop curcumin as a potential anti-cancer drug to treat [throat] cancer." Dr. McKenna further explains: "Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value. Dr. Geraldine O'Sullivan-Coyne, a medical researcher in our lab had been looking for new ways of killing resistant [throat] cancer cells. She tested curcumin on

    http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/234470.php

A 2005 investigation by Wang and her team first revealed that curcumin restrained the growth of head and neck cancer, first in cells and after in mouse models. In the tests on the mice, curcumin was applied in paste form directly onto the tumors. In an investigation in 2010, also done in cells and mouse models, the team discovered that curcumin suppressed head and neck cancer growth by regulating cell cycling, explained Eri Srivatsan, and adjunct professor of surgery, author and a Jonsson Cancer Center investigator who for seven years, together with Wang, has been investigating curcumin and its anti-cancer properties.

This tells me the best delivery vector is via a lipid solution, oil mixed with the curcumin. Similar to the Lipsoma Vit C method. Will a store bought spice powder work? Actually it seems it works no matter how you take it or where you use it.

I've been taking an off the shelf curcumin pill but its expensive. Sold as a pain reliever for joints. I think I am going to try my hand at growing some. I have grown other plants in the family easily enough.

If you can't find fresh curcumin at your grocery store, you can buy it on ebay. Ne sense taking it in pill form if you can buy it fresh.
