my younger bro is a couple years into a 5y electrician apprenticeship; dropped his former main profession in the grocery biz (diff positions through mgmt), when he was 43yo.Oh yeah, has a BA in biz/marketing.
I had an electrician roommate in CO for a few winter months-- he'd layer up & work new construction in < freezing daytime temps, outdoors or in totally unheated half-baked new structures.
Not sure if it's my unfortunate experience, or if it's some epidemic in the elec/plumbing/painting/drywall etc trades, but... the alcoholism?! Ended up having to kick that electrician roommate out (was my house) for his drunken antics after only a few months. Plus have met a number of others in these trades who I judged to be problem drinkers!
I know it's most often not "the work" which drives them mad, but the 'personalities/politics' which enrage them. IE their job site foreman (or whatever they call it) doing little to no "real work", lazy, God-complex, just bark orders in between cigs & chatting on their smartphones or whatever. It seems these "cushy union gigs", esp during boom-times, bring out the worst in some ppl!![]()

"If telling the truth marginalizes you, then that is the place to be. After all, if enough people are willing to be marginalized, then before you know it, society has developed a different center. This is the politics of truth." -- E. Martin Schotz

Many tradesmen are alcoholics, but many other professions are notorious also. Lawyers are some of the worst from what I hear. Things have been going down in the construction trades for many years. I worked rough carpentry for quite awhile and it is brutal, thankless work, especially in the winter. Hands and feet freeze all day long. Some bosses are 'Screamers' but some are decent. The respect and decency among the different trades for each other has dwindled remarkably. This is in some manner due to the unrealistic expectations handed down from the upper levels, to adhere to unrealistic schedules. Everyone ends up bumping into each other and it goes worse than if there were no rush at all. Haste makes waste. I worked with masons for awhile as a tender and it was kind of hilarious the way they would treat the electricians. Electricians tend to be pre-madonnas and think they are better than the other guys on jobs. Someone who feels they are superior and exudes this attitude is not likely to be treated any better than they treat others. Some electricians are cool as hell also.
All in all there is simply less decency and respect on jobs anymore and it wears a man down.
