Everyone is allotted a certain finite amount of creative energy in their life. It can be channeled towards reproduction, which in men means it is directly drained during sex. It can also be stored up and focused towards some other creative activity such as art or science. Storing this energy also makes you more attractive because you emanate it (sometimes it's called animal magnetism).
With masturbation you are just draining off your energy and accomplishing nothing.
Things like muscle development are purely physical and aren't the same energy. Muscles can even be grown in the lab you know.
