Justice official: Miranda rights will not be read to bombing suspect

Washington — A Justice Department official says the Boston Marathon bombing suspect will not be read his Miranda rights because the government is invoking a public safety exception.

That official and a second person briefed on the investigation says 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will be questioned by a special interrogation team for high-value suspects. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to disclose the information publicly.

The public safety exception permits law enforcement officials to engage in a limited and focused unwarned interrogation of a suspect and allows the government to introduce the statement as evidence in court.The public safety exception is triggered when police officers have an objectively reasonable need to protect the police or the public from immediate danger.

From a comment: The picture is NOT the dead "suspect". This was taken when he was under arrest. they asked him to strip down where he did. They took him into custody in good health with no sign of injuries. He was taken away with a police car where shortly after he was pronounced dead at the BETH ISRAEL HOSPITAL

I've experience with high resolution IR scanners and I don't buy the story that they found the guy under the cover on the boat using an IR camera (so-called 'FLIR'*).

I do believe it is possible. I also have experience with them. I noted that the cop (maybe ATF) who talked about it last night mentioned that the boat was covered in plastic (he mentioned saran wrap, then said something else). If so, most plastics are transparent to IR both in the SW (3-5 micron) and LW (7-14 micron), so you see right through it with the imager. It has happened to me many times. In fact I have had to buy special filters so I do NOT see through plastics.

The only thing suspicious is that we see him through what kind of looks like a side boat window too (though I suspect it is a rope, and there is no side window, though looking at zero hedge it is not clear). If the window is plastic, ok. If it is glass, this would not work. Glass is opaque in SW and LW (for instance see: How To Block IR Infrared Thermal Imaging ).

I found this picture here showing a view looking through the glass window. Note there is no thermal signature.

*FLIR stand for 'forward looking infrared' which is a term used for primitive IR scanners from the Vietnam War era and it's what know-nothings happen to call IR cameras/scanners to sound cool, and because it's a widely recognized term for an obsolete FIXED (i.e. 'forward looking' on an aircraft) system a company which got into the IR scanner biz grabbed the name 'FLIR' to sound cool - the ultra top secret handheld IR scanner from the Vietnam War era was a device cooled with argon gas called a Hughes (Aircraft) Probeye -

FLIR is a company, and they make top of the line infrared imagers today. No one (at least in the US) beats them.

BTW Midnight Rambler- I am not saying the facts you present are wrong. I think FLIR started as a company with some of those old aircraft mounted forward looking infrared imagers. I just disagree with your conclusion, because I deal with plastics and IR. At first I thought the boat was covered with a canvas tarp, which may still show a signal, but not as clear, but once I figured out it was a plastic cover, then I felt it was feasible. This is one reason I mention IR sensors on my UAV forum.
