The denarius was a silver coin that represented a day's worth of work. It weighed 6.8 grams, or 0.22 oz. At today's prices, that would be $5.50.
So basically you can buy a day's wages in silver for only $5.50 right now. To be valued reasonably, the price would have to rise about 10 - 15x.
