The former glam rock singer Gary Glitter faces the prospect of dying in jail after being sentenced to 16 years for sexually abusing three schoolgirls.

The 70-year-old, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was found guilty of one count of attempted rape, one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, and four counts of indecent assault. All six offences were committed in the 1970s and 80s.

Glitter, dressed in a black velvet coat and burgundy scarf, showed no reaction as he was led from the dock after being sentenced at Southwark crown court in London on Friday.

Former Yeshivah Centre employee charged with sexual assault offences while in prison

A former employee of ultra-orthodox Jewish institution Yeshivah Centre has been charged with indecent assault offences that he allegedly committed while in prison.

Police allege the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Geelong Magistrate Ronald Saines via video link from Barwon Prison on Tuesday.
Police allege he committed two counts of indecent assault against one victim, and three counts of indecent assault against another victim last year.

Child sexual abuse at the Yeshivah Centre was the focus of a hearing of the Royal Commission on Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse last month. The commission revealed that senior rabbis at the centre - which includes a rabbinical college and two single-sex high schools - ignored and covered up victims' reports of abuse over more than 20 years.

Following Edathy’s admission, the Verden District Court in the German state of Lower Saxony on Monday handed the former Social Democrats (SPD) deputy a fine of 5,000 euros ($5,600), bringing the trial to an end.

In order to avoid conviction, chief prosecutor Thomas Klinge had demanded a credible confession of guilt.’

"Edathy regrets what happened," his attorney Christian Noll said in a statement on Monday.

The 45-year-old was on trial for downloading child pornography to his work laptop and possessing a book, as well as a CD, which contained images considered "harmful to youths."

Investigators became aware of his activities after his name had appeared on the client list of a Canadian company which was alleged to have distributed child pornography.

Edathy previously denied accusations of being a pedophile and contended that the pictures and videos in his possession were art and not pornography.

The case has resulted in an amendment to Germany's pornography laws, under which it is now a crime to take nude photographs of minors in order to sell or exchange them. The statute of limitations on sex crimes has also been extended.

Edathy rose to prominence in Germany when he headed a parliamentary committee looking into why police and intelligence services failed to stop a neo-Nazi murder spree.

The Sunderland winger was questioned by police after three unmarked police cars and a van arrived at his £1.85 million house early on Monday morning. The official police watchdog is to investigate claims that Scotland Yard covered up the murder of a young boy at the hands of a Westminster paedophile ring.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will examine whether corrupt Met Police officers ignored clues to the death of eight-year-old Vishal Mehrotra in 1981.

Last November Vishal’s father, retired magistrate Vishambar Mehrotra, told the Telegraph that police had deliberately covered up his son’s killing to protect a network of high-profile child abusers.

After his allegations were passed to Scotland Yard, the Met Police launched an internal investigation into historic "corruption", which has now been referred to the IPCC.

Vishal was abducted as he walked home to Putney, south-west London, after watching the marriage procession of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

He disappeared less than a mile away from the notorious Elm Guest House in Barnes, where a group of high-profile paedophiles including MPs are said to have abused young boys. Six months later the young boy’s bones were found in a Sussex field.

Last December, the Metropolitan Police announced it was investigating possible murders linked to the guesthouse.

The new inquiry was opened when an alleged victim came forward claiming to have witnessed three boys being killed, including one allegedly strangled by a Conservative MP during a depraved sex game.

In December, Vishal’s father, Vishambar Mehrotra, a retired magistrate, told the Telegraph he had recorded a mystery caller saying his son might have been taken to the Elm Guest House.

He took the recording to police at the time but claimed they refused to investigate an allegation implicating “judges and politicians”. Mr Mehrotra said it had been a huge 'cover-up'.

After the Telegraph passed his complaint to police, the Met launched an internal probe led by the force's Directorate of Professional Standards.

That investigation has now been handed over to the independent police watchdog, which will decide whether the original case was handled correctly............

Harvey Proctor’s home searched in establishment child sex abuse investigation

The home of former Conservative MP Harvey Proctor is being searched by police investigating historic allegations of child sex abuse.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Midland are carrying out the search of his home, which is within the 16,000-acre grounds of Belvoir Castle, in Leicestershire near Grantham.

Mr Proctor, 68, works for the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, who live on the estate with their five children.

Operation Midland was launched by the Met last November following allegations that boys were sexually abused by a VIP paedophile ring centred around Westminster more than 30 years ago. Some of the parties are said to have taken place at the Dolphin Square apartment complex which is home to many MPs.’

Officers are investigating allegations that three boys linked to the alleged ring were murdered.

While Mr Proctor's house was being raided he phoned Radio 4's Today Programme to deny any wrong-doing.

The former MP said he had never attended "sex parties" and knew nothing about allegations that three young boys had been murdered by pedophiles with links to Westminster.

Mr Proctor said that, although he had been convicted of gross indecency in 1987, his crimes related to encounters which would not be illegal today.

He had been engaged in sexual relationships with boys he believed at the time were over 21, the age of consent at the time. The age of consent for homosexuals has since been lowered to 16.

Mr Proctor also said he was the victim of homophobia. Claiming he was caught up in a "Kafka-esque situation," he went on: "I have never attended sex parties at Dolphin Square or anywhere else.

"I have not been part of any rent boy ring with Cabinet ministers, other MPs or generals or the military. I conducted my private life in a discreet manner, it wasn’t I who outed myself, it was the press who did an assortment of things to out me.

"The police have said basically what you have just said, that they’re investigating historical sex abuse allegations going back to the 1970s and the 1980s. I may not have known of the detail of it but anyone would be blind if they hadn’t seen the press relating to these matters over the last year and I find myself in a very Kafka-esque fantasy situation."

A Met Police spokesman said he "can confirm officers from Operation Midland are carrying out a search of an address in Grantham in connection with their inquiries". ...............

Last week, he even boasted of being the ‘world expert’ on organising campfire get-togethers.

But now he must add a chilling new entry to his list of achievements: he has become the first paedophile to be tried and convicted after being linked to allegations of a VIP ring based at an infamous South London guesthouse who preyed on boys from a nearby care home.

And unless police make further progress with their investigations, he could well be the last.

For decades — culminating in his trial and conviction at Southwark Crown Court on Friday — McSweeney, 68, lied and lied.

He broke criminal laws, childcare rules, the bond of trust between priest and congregation and his priestly vows of celibacy, sometimes in the most disgusting fashion.

His offending, as far as we know, goes back to the Seventies when, while training for the priesthood, he worked as a part-time carer at a local authority-run home for vulnerable boys in Grafton Close, Richmond-upon-Thames.

He was given the job by the manager, his ‘good friend’ — and fellow predator — John Stingemore.
