I recently came across a great article by Wade Meredith that explains very well what happens when you drink just 1 can of Coca Cola and this applies to pretty much most caffeinated soft drinks, not just Coke!

• In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid and other flavorings cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
• 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)
• 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your liver dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
• 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.

when i was in college and was first learning to abuse my endocrine system for short-term performance enhancement, i would stop about 1 hour into a final and pull a cold Coke out of my bag.

then i would put my feet up, kick back, and spend 5 minutes watching the people around me, like I was in some sort of zoo with hairless monkeys who worked hard to get degrees.

that was before[/b] i learned to drink coffee.

the first coffee i drank was from the machine in the Physics Department student lounge. 15 cents a cup,
and it actually tasted good.


i then went on to watch my co-workers abuse their endocrine system, during a summer job at the
Stanford Linear Accelerator.

I counted 20 cups of coffee for some of the physicists - and then stopped counting.

in Silicon Valley, it's certainly a time-honored tradition to abuse one's endocrine system, for
performance enhancement.

most of the guys kept it under control, balanced things out with a 1/2 hour of racquetball, etc.

at one house, the Security director (who overlooks all the security clearances and security guards)
was a Tab Man.

2 six packs a day.

i don't need to do the math to know, that's a boat load of caffeine.


i think the most massive caffeine consumption i've heard of, for performance reasons, was that
of Tony Mandarich. he was a line man for some pro football teams.

i would guess even US presidents have caffeine problems.
