San Francisco could get first snowfall since 1976
Chicago snow expected to break 115-year record
It looks like Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction on Groundhog Day that America would enjoy an early Spring was somewhat off the mark.

More snow is forecast for the Midwest, severe storms are developing in two southern states and San Francisco is expected to see snowfall for the first time in 35 years.
A severe storm day is unfolding around Texas and Oklahoma, and this will head east into Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
White California: Forecasters believe San Francisco could be hit with its first snow since February 1976, as wintery weather continues over parts of America
Forecast: The Midwest is expecting more snow, a severe storm is developing over Texas and Oklahoma and San Francisco could get its first fall in 35 years
Three to four inches of rain are expected in states further north such as Kentucky and Tennessee, with flood watches in place, reported CNN.

A winter weather advisory for Chicago will be launched on Thursday night and up to five inches of snow is expected in the area by Friday.
This will come after sleet and rain from Thursday evening, and is expected to break the February record from 115 years ago of 27.8 inches, reported NBC Chicago.
Record: Chicago has already been hit by a severe winter, but up to five inches of snow on Friday could mean it has had the biggest February fall for 115 years
In the Northwest, widespread snow is forecast over areas including Seattle and Salt Lake City, and this could even spread to unlikely parts of northern California.
Sacramento and San Francisco have not seen snow since 1976, but a cold air mass from the Gulf of Alaska could bring colder weather and rain to the California cities.
Snow could form as temperatures may drop to the mid-20s on Thursday and Friday evening. But residents had better be quick if they want to document it.

Snowballs: It could be time for San Francisco children to get outside and play in the snow again like 1976 if it gets only its fourth fall in more than 120 years
‘It's so rare,’ forecaster Bob Benjamin told the San Francisco Examiner.

WHITE BLANKETS: A history of snow in San Francisco
Snow has only fallen three times in the last 120 years in San Francisco, archives say

The last falls big enough to make a snowball happened in 1951, 1962 and 1976
But before the 1950s, you have to go back to 1887 for the last significant snowfall

‘Any snow will be temporary. Probably long enough to take a picture - if you have a camera with a fast shutter.’
Elsewhere large hail and winds are expected to develop around the Mid Mississippi Valley and even isolated tornadoes could pop up in the area.
The main areas threatened by tornadoes on Thursday night are eastern Arkansas, northern Mississippi and western Tennessee, the Storm Prediction Center said.
Snow and ice could cause problems from northern Kansas to New England, with heavy snowfall expected to reach ten inches locally, reported ABC.

But not all the country is suffering in wintry weather.

While temperatures on Thursday are just 11F in Rapid City, Atlanta is enjoying a balmy day of 70F

One can only hope it will pile up deep enough to cause the place to break off and sink.

What a horrible thought!

If SF serves a critical purpose - it concentrates all lot of silliness in a single location. If it was gone, all the weirdos would stay spread evenly across the nation (meaning they could live next door to you instead of out here on the left coast.)

BTW - it is butt-ass cold here in the Bay Area - it was almost 38F here last night - the horror, the horror!

(Ok, the central coast of California really spoils you - it rarely gets below 50F and rarely about 80F - most natives do not understand the idea of "winter clothes" - since everyone wears pretty much the same clothes year round. [It is actually colder in SF in June than October.])
