While browsing an Edinburgh paper circa 1867 I read an account of a huge National Rifle Association held in Brussels around that time. Something around 2,000 people attending at that time. I have always wondered, if rights are protected by constitution, why it is necessary to have an organization such as the NRA to lobby and negotiate these rights away.

The NRA does not recognize any ties to any European organization. Seems odd they would decide to use the same name though.

Dismayed by the lack of marksmanship shown by their troops, Union veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate formed the National Rifle Association in 1871. The primary goal of the association would be to "promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis," according to a magazine editorial written by Church.

Here is a google book tracing the NRA's European roots from 1859 - 1876

Chapter XVI discusses the formation of the United States NRA in 1873-1874.

This is the same approach taken by sporting shooters association in Australia. Scientific shooting.

since the NRA is not just about "rifle rights" but about gun rights in general, what should their name be ? National Firearms Association ?

How about the Association For the Protection of Men?

A bit of history for ya - in 1986 shortly after the machinegun ban (McClure-Vulkmer) a handful of machinegun owners and Class III dealers formed a guns rights organization by the name of the National Firearms Association to organize opposition to the semi-auto ban looming on the horizon. A member of this forum joined that organization in 1989. The NFA was disbanded in the early '90s after making some progress but running into resistance from moronic NRA members who suffered from rectal-cranial inversion. The most often thing heard by those in the NFA trying to recruit supporters: "The NRA is looking after my rights, I don't need to join any other organization" as they looked down their noses.

The NRA is looking after my rights

Rights are not protected by words on paper or by Corporations. Rights are CLAIMED and then DEFENDED by the Individual. This is why the pseudo religious CULT called Government is immoral and unjust, and from a logical standpoint is the same as worshipping the Volcano God.
