my permit came last friday.
had to go in to town to do some shopping. already knew which stores were posted, so i had a list of where to go.
carried my beretta bobcat 21a. my new carry gun will be picked up on saturday (i'm in the 3-day holding pattern), a beretta px4 storm sub-compact in 9mm.
have to admit, i was pretty self conscious the whole time, like i was walking around carrying a bag of drugs just waiting to get arrested. i hope that fades. apparently i have been conditioned to think of guns as bad just like the rest of society.

It gets easier the more you do it. A good holster can go a long way to building confidence.
With the cold weather coming, it's much easier to dress around carrying. In the warmer months it gets a bit tougher. This article does a good job of explaining how different styles of dress can yield the best result.

Over time you'll get more and more comfortable carrying it. In fact, that's the concern, soon it'll become so normal you'll tend to start taking it for granted, and you have to be diligent to remind yourself that you're carrying a deadly weapon.

Congrats Chad and I agree with madfranks. There is great responsibility when you carry and taking that responsibility for granted is something that those that do carry should never do.

Chad, how do you like the Bobcat 21a? Does it fit comfortably in a front pants pocket? I've been thinking about getting one. I wouldn't be using it as a defensive carry where I had to draw quickly. Mostly I want it for a very small comfortable gun to carry around the farm. There are a lot of times I've seen a skunk or possum that I wanted to get rid of, but I didn't have a gun handy because they are all more cumbersome than I want to carry when working on machinery, etc.

that's exactly what i use it for around my property. it's about the size of a deck of cards or a pack of smokes. you can easily throw it in a coat or pants pocket. i actually love the gun, but be warned, it will only function properly if you use cci stingers, mini mags, or velicitors. anything else and it will not cycle and you'll be sitting there with a jammed cartridge. they say it works with winchester super x, but i have not had luck with those. as long as you know what you are getting in to in regards to ammo situation, i say go for it.

I have a cobra .22lr Derringer that was given to me many years ago, that goes dam near everywhere that I go and sometimes carry when out and about. Belly guns sometimes do have their uses and for dammed sure. Toss a few rounds into the pocket with the gun. Beats not having anything at all.

It's one thing for you to feel comfortable with it, and you should. What you need to worry about is something like this happening.

I understand what you went through though, the first few times I carried I was overwhelmed with the fact that I had a loaded weapon on my person, and that thought permeated everything I did those first few days. But what comes with it is a great sense of empowerment, that you know you are capable, without anyone's help, not even the police, to be able to protect you and yours. That feeling is priceless and never goes away.

Yes, the 9mm would be a more desirable choice. But you're carrying SOMETHING and thats a plus! You might save a life one day...and may it be your own ;)

have about 5 or so holsters for my fav carry , G26. Only one I use now is Kydex. Galco Triton IWB(tr86). I looked and did not see one for your incoming 9mm. Just saying I would recommend this holster 100%. So, maybe check out some other kydex ones and search reviews on them.

Wanna come with me? I'm gonna go drive out to check other states in Spring. I liked Wyoming, but I feel like there's probably something better. It didn't feel fully like "home" to me though. Considering going to see Oklahoma and/or Idaho next.

And as Merle Haggard says, they don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee.
I don't think they take any trips on LSD either.
Merle Haggard also said that he didn't spend much time in Muskogee...

Don't discount Colorado. We have the "make my day" law here that protects property owners when they defend themselves against intruders.

Wow look at this:
Mini 22 revolver with a cylinder that doesn't have to come completely out to load. I used to see these small nano-revolvers have the entire cylinder pop out, which looked like a bitch to reload, but now this revolver does it like a normal revolver.

Lets you swap out 22LR cylinder for 22 Magnum too. This looks cool!

Oklahoma is OK. I lived there for a few years, never had a problem. Lots of freedom, low cost of living. Other flyover country states to check out include MO, AR and Iowa. Low cost of living, cheap land, low property taxes, minimal regulation, and everyone has more than one gun (on them)..

Oh, Im all about the fly over states and their culture. I'd move to Montana in a heart beat (if the wife liked the cold). Theres just other choices loooong ahead of Oklahoma.
Trust me, I dont suggest many people move to south-central florida either, though North Florida is really nice (to me).
