Apartment Fliers Advise Black Residents to Keep Quiet

Residents at an Irvine, California, apartment complex were in for an unpleasant surprise when they stepped into the building’s elevator last night. A flier reminding tenants to keep it down at night pointed to black renters as the primary offenders.

A new poster had appeared on two different elevators in Toscana Apartments. The start of the message is innocuous enough, asking residents to be mindful of their neighbors by turning down their TVs and stereos in the evening hours.
But the second half—in bold text—is flagrantly racist: “We also would like to remind our African-American residents to keep conversation volume down and reduce music levels between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.”
The offending image picked up speed on social media, with some questioning whether the image had been doctored. An Instagram user and tenant, who identifies herself as “TT” under the handle @teyent_theequeenb, posted an incriminating video of the poster, deflating accusations of it having been photoshopped.
And while the poster seemingly exists, that doesn’t mean the real estate company is responsible.
Equity Residential, a national company that owns Toscana Apartments along with properties in roughly a dozen states across the country, has denied any association.
“Neither Equity Residential nor Toscana Apartments created or posted this flier. We are outraged by its content and are actively investigating its source,” the company posted (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10155583150200324&id=239219500323&hc_location=ufi) on Facebook.
Equity spokesperson Marty McKenna maintains that the flier is not consistent with how management typically handles noise complaints, preferring to discuss violations on an individual basis, Gawker reports (http://gawker.com/property-company-racist-irvine-apartment-flyer-is-a-fa-1707698512).
Though the origins of the flier are unknown—possibly a racist tenant or a rogue employee created it—this instance highlights discrimination within the Orange County suburban area and its neighboring university. Black residents make up a small portion of Orange County’s population, with 74 percent white residents and 2 percent black, according (http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/06/06059.html) to 2013 census figures. Black people represent just 1.7 percent (http://www.cityofirvine.org/about/demographics.asp) of the Irvine community.
Although the building is not affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, some of its students live at Toscana Apartments. UCI has a storied history of racist grievances (http://www.takepart.com/article/2015/04/03/noose-found-duke-and-we-may-have-college-racism-problem), including videos created by fraternities in which members sport blackface and hold paddles labeled “slave driver,” documented in a petition (http://www.newuniversity.org/2015/01/news/black-student-lists-demands-for-administration/) from the black student union this year requesting additional resources for black students.
In the meantime, TT is hoping she can finish her college career despite the discrimination following her home. “Lord give me strength to finish school in Irvine,” she wrote as her Instagram caption.

They can get sorta loud, have a family that lives on the next block abt 100 yards or so from me, a guy there only knows two volume levels to talk with others.

Loud and louder when more than two are in the conversation, that I can hear him from my house when outside.

I don't think it is necessarily their volume that is upsetting, it's the ugliness of their cultural expression. That fucking street dialect (in its many forms) is nearly unbearable.

Vietnamese are loud and obnoxious in groups as well, and I find them nearly as grating and annoying as blacks in that sense.

so many of these groups came to the US or Europe because the US & Israel made their lives in their previous countries, unliveable.

(or Jew slave-traders, in earlier days.)

imagine the world without the Vietnam War. Vietnamese living in Vietnam, no Agent Orange.

no slave traders = black folks mostly in Africa.

no Israel = most Muslims living in the Middle East.

about the ghetto behavior -

i think there is a wierd but very real "Reality of the Streets" where the behavior that seems repulsive to us, e.g. the pants around the knees, boxers on full display ... somehow becomes survival-related.

a very strange display of (sometimes) in-your-face masculinity, "I'm so tough I can wear my pants in the position that in prison is a sign of wanting gay sex". Like, WHAT ?!

OK, you guys, come on, let's get some cameras and some nail guns (for defense) and go down to the 19th Ave. Bart Station in Oakland and interview some of these blobs of protoplasm. :)

It doesn't have to be photoshopped - anyone with a computer and a printer could make that flyer up and post it wherever they wanted. Back when I was in college my buddy and I made a bunch of stupid flyers and posted them all over campus.

Exactly, it is not the actual noise level that is upsetting to you, it is the fact they speak ebonics and ghettoesque that stirs your tomatoes. If they spoke queens English instead, they could be much louder, and it wouldnt be nearly as upsetting to your peace. But you know the old saying: Niggas do as Niggas, dindu nuffin... ;D

My belief is that pure racism is actually quite uncommon. The friction between groups is actually caused by cultural differences. There's a reason why it's not called "multiracism", but "multiculturism". The core elements of different cultures will never mix; they aren't supposed to. I've met plenty of people that I like that belong to other races, but I won't accept them if their cultural expression is not similar to mine. Yes, I do find that well-dressed black business owners that drink craft beer are more likeable than a Detroit street thug blaring gangsta-rap and swiggin' a 40 with his homies, speaking in a dialect I can't understand. It has very little to do with being black. I have something in common with the former, and abhor the latter.

But, just pointing out the obvious difference makes me a Racist™.

They come from a land where there is no advancement. Tribes running around killing and enslaving each other for thousands of years.

The disciplines of civility, manners, ethics, have little meaning to these sub-humans.

To expect them to live here in a harmonious culture is ridiculous.
