View Full Version : Mice

Got down to the old boat today, been a couple of months. She's trashed. Mice got in and just destroyed the boat. They chewed up clothes, cushions, wood...it's not good. I tried to clean some of it up, but soon realized I need some sort of respirator to protect myself. Mouse crap everywhere. It's bad, I can't believe the damage they can do.

So, I put out some traps and poison bait. I'll check on it in the morning. Tomorrow, I'll get a respirator and start cleaning up. I think I'm going to try this guy's trick, just set up a bunch of traps with tootsie rolls as bait.

If anyone has any advise, I could sure use it.

Thanks, I'll try that as well. I don't know how many mice, maybe a hundred. Plus the boat is loaded with food. Best I can tell they can't get into the canned food, so my mountain house 10 cans should be fine. There's MRE's though I need to check. This is one situation where trying to be prepared has just bitten me in the ass.

or get you a mouser. family has been through a ton of cats -- one mouser stands supreme (mice, birds, everything else..). 24/7 dedicated to his craft. he looked like this:

While it's pretty disappointing they got into your food but be sure to check your wiring and so on. make sure they haven't chewed through that, safety gear etc. I' sure you're on to that anyway. Rats are notorious around water as well. Obviously the "signs" would be a bit different. Our winter is well over due here and every thing is breeding like it's spring time. Rats and mice included. Very unusual. Of course they are spraying like there's no tomorrow here now. Seem to have been able to kill all the rain very effectively so far this winter. We're getting mid 80's temps when it should be around 70 and wet.

Thanks Glass. Spent all day working on the boat, what a mess. The good news, not as much damage to the boat as I thought. Some clothes, and they chewed the wood in a few spots, but mostly just a big mess. I got a lot of it cleaned up. I started at the stern and worked forward. More good news, there was a whole pantry of preps they couldn't get into for some reason. Canned food, vacuum sealed flower, sugar, and rice, etc. A lot of preps I was able to save.

The downside, all MRE's are gone. They didn't even eat them I think, just chewed through the packaging. Same with the lifeboat rations, all gone, because they compromised the packaging. What a fucking waste of food, those little bastards.

I've found out they've holed up in the forepeak. I could actually hear them moving around as I was cleaning up the area. I've set bait traps, regular snap traps, the whole works for them. I'll post an update tomorrow as to if I got any of them.

What I've learned from this:

They get into everything, but not canned foods. All my canned goods are fine, as well as thankfully all my Mountain House #10 cans. Pretty much everything else they destroy, even if they don't eat it. MRE's, what a waste, as well as any vacuum packed foods. Cans are the way to go, none of my canned bacon was even touched! :) I got a smile from that.

Secondly, they can chew through small Tupperware containers, the thin ones, but don't touch the thick containers. Note to self, store MRE's properly, in thick plastic containers.

I'm a little bummed out about the MRE's, they were expensive, and I was looking forward to having them around on a rainy day.

Reeces peanut butter cups. :) They loved them, went right for the traps. I got three of the little bastards last night. The bad news, they aren't so little. They are not mice, but rats. No wonder they tore the boat apart moving in. Hopefully that's all of them, but I may be optimistic.

Well, a rat at distance could possibly look like a moose!

You can pretend they are mooses. Use need to try moose proofing your yacht. ;D

Yep peanut butter usually works every time.

Use liberal amounts of these. Maybe put them in plastic containers and remove the lids when you are gone for extended periods?

It must be a big yatch if there 3 mooses on board and hitch couldn't see them.

The mooses would have to be very very small or far far away. Perhaps hitch can mount a few moose heads and sell them online to recoup some expenses.

Anyway, as I suspected.

I believe they were all Democrats. They moved in without asking, took what they want with total disregard to anyone else, plus, they felt entitled to do that the whole time.

Good metaphor, I'm sure the democrats were promoting homosexuality in their newly acquired abode, demanding more welfare and calling anyone a racist that disagrees with them.

Sounds like on some water somewhere. Think he is docked near Otter marina near beer slough on the deep blue deep side of the pacific. Where he tries to avoid doing a Jonah when he is out fishing in the bay by passing whales = very small boat vs very big whale.

Think whalegulpm harbor is the name his slip is in.

Forget the soft preps. How did the gold and silver survive? The large moose's ate a hole in the bottom of his yacht and all of his pm's sank to the bottom of the bay, the boat flotation kept it from sinking but the pm's hit the very soft mud and sank out of sight and hope of recovery unless dredged through the mud to bedrock.

Think "Oak Island"

Well, I learned this lesson, the hard way. Lesson = you leave home, anything can happen to your preps. You are not there to look after them. Also, the 4 legged critters can be worse than the 2 legged ones.

Here's what I learned.

1) With rats, good housekeeping means nothing. They will get into to whatever you've got, if they can. If you leave home for awhile, and if they can get in, they will get your preps. These rats chewed a hole through a 1 inch bulkhead, solid wood, to get at my stores. That's how determined they are.

2) Deny them entry. If they can't get in, they can't get your stuff, bottom line. Any opening greater than a 1/4 inch is suspect.

3) Canned goods. They can't get at them, all canned goods were fine. Vacuum sealed stuff, and MRE's, they destroy .

4) They have to chew. Their teeth keep growing and gnawing on things is the only way they can control it. Expect damage to a lot of things not related to food, such as wood, wiring, you name it.

5) The only way to fix the problem is to kill every single one of them. First, seal off the place so more can't get in. Stop their entry. Then, kill them. Traps work the best.

Take those lessons to heart, and live them. and you should be ok..but always look behind youself, mainly because you will miss something.

Only poking fun with poor puns. I'm sorry that you've had the problem because it's a cost in time and $$ that no one needs.

Keeping the blighters out is a challenge everywhere. I myself lost a fair amount of preps last year because I personally got slack. Not rats but bugs. A lot of money went in the bin. No one to blame but myself. My lesson learned.

Rats will be around water and they will come across the mooring ropes or even swim if they can get a foot hold from the water. Some baits that won't leave a mess, although dead ones on board will leave a mess.

And yes, Cans sounds like your best option on a couple levels. Water tight, air tight, rodent proof.

Can you find one of those Canning co-op places in your area... that have those actual canning machines. Not sure if it was ImaCanin or someone else talk about those. I think a couple people mentioned them before. Buy regular preps then get some number 10's and seal them yourself?

Yep, he needs to up his game, life is a game really, think about it , some waste their time, others make hay. = good thing,

Rat proof/moose bock their entry, put your shit in industrial a containers, but the biggest thing is block any entry to begin with. First defense.

But I feer you have learned that hard lesson, question is can it stick.?
