Why are they not faking SAEs if they can fake maples and even random generic? Scared of the Secret Service investigating counterfeit "money"?
I guess I'll be buying mercury dimes only now :(
Mark my words:
The day will come when Mercury Dimes will command a legendary premium.
They are the smallest unit of divisible Silver recognized by face alone.
They will be the last if ever coin counterfeited because of size and detail of design.
My foolish advice?
Load up on Mercurys while the majority are looking at other things

Everytime I go to my small time dealer I buy every Merc Dime he has (mostly because of your advice tbh...which I agree with). He always puts them on the counter for me and he never has many (10 - 100 usually). Its the first thing I buy and if I have left over FRNs (usually do, I then look at other things). He doesn't even ask anymore...he smiles when he see me, says he has $xxx (silver value) in merc dimes and asks "how much cash did you bring with you today, what else can I show you" Fractional gold or SAEs are usually next but every now and then I get a wild hare in the neather regions and look for maples, or standing liberty quarters or whatever else looks pretty cool.
I'll need to check out my maples tonight.

Wow this meter is slick: calculates the alloy content in less than 2 seconds!

Would like to see them demonstrate that thing on a fake. I think an efficient, non-intrusive technology for identifying fakes is good for the industry and for PM holders. A proliferation of fakes devalues your real asset, and scares away potential new demand.

I posted this link in another thread, but it might be appropriate here too.

This is how the whole tungsten fakery got going with gold bars at Ft. Knox. It's an interesting read if nothing else.
What worries me about fake silver and gold coins is that the real coins will be much harder to sell if the fakery isn't controlled. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the fake coins are being minted by some black ops agencies of governments. Just to create a widespread fear that there are no safe havens. I have this visual image in my head of an Arab street merchant biting a coin that was offered in exchange for his wares. Must be from some really old movie.
