Yes well I traveled to Thailand with my wife and 16 year old son. We booked the trip almost a year ago, and yes when reports of this influenza started coming, we did have a discussion re if we were going to go. Thailand having had 20+ infections of something that doesn’t appear much more dangerous than the seasonal flu, seemed like a silly reason to cancel our long planned trip. My idea is that if this is contained as it appears to be in China, it’s not really any problem going anywhere. If it isn’t, it will sooner or later come to where you are. It is also a possibility that it might until next season mutate to something more dangerous and in those cases having had a previous similar infection would most certainly give your immune system a head start in dealing with what comes your way. Finally, yes I am becoming increasingly aware of my own mortality, and my decision is that I am going to live my life to the fullest without unreasonable fears, but I wouldn’t had ventured to Thailand and Cambodia if information suggested that thousands were seriously ill from this in these countries. Just like I wouldn’t go traveling in China at these times.
Yes some of my comments were very strongly tongue in cheek, because I think humor is an excellent way of challenging commonly held ideas and dogmas. For instance I tell my patients who are afraid of my neck adjustments, that I learned them by watching hundreds of hours of Kung Fu movies. Strangely the absurdity of it seems to help people relax.
